Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Wounded SanctuaryBy 1:00 AM, the glass-domed central pavilion of the Rose Conservatory was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the grand wrought-iron gates, six black armored SUVs from Vance Security guarded every perimeter point. Inside, eight-year-old Ruby Brooks was fast asleep in a plush makeshift bed set up in her mother’s private office, wrapped in soft cashmere blankets, clutching her small plush rabbit while her cactus, "The Chancellor," sat safely on the nightstand beside her.
In the adjoining botanical library, sitting at a long oak table beneath hanging ferns and amber lanterns, were me, Mara Brooks, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table before Mara and me:
"Mateo, Mara," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Silas Greco, his shell companies, and the 2023 arson investigation is complete."
Mara sat in a wicker armchair, wearing her faded canvas gardening apron over a simple woolen sweater, her hazel-green eyes wide with shock and long-suppressed pain as she looked at the ledgers.
Bridget tapped the digital displays:
THE ARSON DOSSIER: Certified forensic reports proving Silas Greco paid two professional saboteurs $1.5 million to ignite the 2023 warehouse fire, intending to eliminate Elias Varela after Elias discovered Silas was smuggling contraband through the foundation's shipping berths.
THE EMBEZZLED HERITAGE TRUST: Proof that Silas Greco systematically diverted $85 million from the Elias Varela Memorial Fund over three years into offshore accounts in Panama to finance the industrial buyout.
THE SOVEREIGN CHARTER: Original federal deeds confirming eight-year-old Ruby Brooks and her mother Mara Brooks as life-tenured administrative custodians of the entire fifteen-acre Rose Conservatory property, backed by an irrevocable fifty-one percent controlling equity mandate established by Elias Varela before his passing.
Mara covered her face with her trembling hands, tears spilling over her fingers. "Elias knew..." she whispered, her voice breaking into a soft, weeping thread. "Before he passed away, Elias told me he had set up a protective trust for Ruby's education... but Silas told us three months ago that the trust was empty!"
"The trust wasn't empty, Mara," I revealed, my voice dipping into a low, resonant rumble thick with unshakeable devotion. "Silas stole it. He spent three years trying to starve this sanctuary so you would surrender the land."

I stepped across the wooden floorboards, dropping flat onto one knee in front of Mara’s wicker chair. The broad, muscular titan whose name commanded terror across Midwest shipping networks reached out, taking her soft, soil-stained hands into my broad, calloused palms.
"They used my grief and my blindness to hurt you and Ruby," I swore, looking into Mara’s hazel eyes with a fierce, diamond-hard resolve. "Tomorrow morning at the City Development Assembly... we give Elias his justice, and we give Ruby her home forever."
