Chapter 3 - The Assembly at the Glass ConservatoryAt 10:00 AM the following morning, the grand glass-and-mahogany auditorium of the Chicago Municipal Center was packed to absolute capacity.

Over four hundred prominent real estate magnates, commercial logistics directors, syndicate capos, and city officials gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers for the annual Midwest Heritage & Urban Development Summit.
Sitting at the head of the raised executive table, wearing a tailored dark velvet suit, holding a silver pen, was sixty-two-year-old Silas Greco. Beside him sat his corrupt corporate legal counsel, Richard Sterling-Smith, smirking as they prepared to sign the final acquisition contracts to demolish the Rose Conservatory and convert the land into industrial chemical berths.
"Gentlemen!" Silas announced into the central microphone, his voice dripping with condescending authority, "today we ratify the commercial acquisition and urban clearance of the Elias Varela Memorial Land, permanently retiring the administrative claims of the former foundation—"
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors of the executive assembly hall were thrown open with a violent, hydraulic impact!
The chatter of four hundred high-society guests vanished into an absolute, speech-bound silence.
Walking down the central red-carpeted aisle, flanked by Chief Security Director Marcus Vance and four armed federal marshals, was Mateo Varela.
I wore a magnificent dark charcoal bespoke suit, my broad six-foot-three frame squared, radiating an untouchable, sovereign authority that dropped the room's temperature to absolute zero.
And walking right beside me, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk suit that celebrated her graceful figure, her dark hair styled in glossy waves over her shoulders, holding her eight-year-old daughter Ruby by her hand, was Donna Mara Brooks-Varela.
Little Ruby wore a custom dark blue velvet coat over a white dress, holding her cactus "The Chancellor" securely in a small woven basket, her hazel eyes bright, curious, and unbroken.
Silas Greco dropped his silver pen.
CRASH!
The heavy pen clattered flat against the mahogany table, rolling onto the floor as his face went from arrogant red to an ugly, paper-white shade of green. Richard Sterling-Smith stood up so fast he knocked his leather chair backward against the wall.
"S-SILAS...?! MATEO?! MARA?!" Silas stammered, taking two panicked steps backward against the window. "WHAT IS THIS ILL-MANNERED INTERRUPTING?! THAT LAND HAS BEEN DECLARED ABANDONED BY THE CITY TRUST!"
"The land was never abandoned, Silas," I announced flatly, my clear, deep baritone carrying cleanly across the silent hall, dropping the room's temperature to zero. "You murdered my brother Elias to steal it. And today, his heirs take it back."
Bridget Colton stepped forward, sliding a thick stack of court-stamped legal notices flat into Silas Greco’s trembling hands:
TOTAL MARITIME & LAND RECOVERY: Certified federal enforcement of the Elias Varela Memorial Deeds, transferring 100% controlling equity and land ownership directly to Chairwoman Mara Brooks-Varela and Ruby Brooks.
ARREST WARRANTS: International arrest warrants served on Silas Greco, Richard Sterling-Smith, and two hired arsonists for First-Degree Premeditated Murder (in the death of Elias Varela), Arson, Forgery, and $85 Million Wire Fraud.
IMMEDIATE TERMINATION: Permanent forfeiture of all personal properties, luxury vehicles, and corporate credentials registered under Silas Greco’s shell companies.
"THIS IS UNLAWFUL!" Silas shrieked, thrashing wildly as two uniformed federal marshals stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs. "YOU WERE BROKEN, MATEO! YOU COULDN'T EVEN SLEEP FOR THREE YEARS! YOU WERE A MADMAN!"
"I was broken until an eight-year-old girl told your guards to let me rest," I corrected deadpan, stepping beside Mara and Ruby, wrapping my broad, warm arm securely around Mara's waist, pulling her flush against my side. "And now... you spend the rest of your life in a dark cell."

Silas Greco and his counsel thrashed and wept hysterical, groveling pleas as marshals locked heavy steel cuffs around their wrists behind their backs, dragging them out of the Municipal Center in total, public disgrace, while news cameras captured their complete downfall for the morning news.
