Chapter 7 - Dawn Over GreenwichThree days later, the private maternity suite at Greenwich Memorial Hospital was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp winter sunrise. Outside, snow blanketed the quiet lawns, but inside, the room was filled with the soft, miraculous melody of a newborn baby’s first cries.

Serena sat propped up against plush white pillows, cradling a tiny, perfect bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket. The baby had a full head of dark hair and tiny, peaceful features, sleeping soundly against her chest as if she had never known a moment of chaos.
The door clicked open softly. Footsteps approached, and a gentle hand rested on the back of her chair. Serena looked up to see Detective Miller standing there, holding a manila folder and a steaming cup of herbal tea.
“How are the mother and daughter doing?” Miller asked with a warm, respectful smile.
“We’re doing wonderfully,” Serena smiled, pressing a soft kiss to her daughter’s forehead. “No more alarms, no more monsters.”
“Good to hear,” Miller said, setting the folder on the bedside table. “Just wanted to give you a quick update. The federal indictment against Matthias and his father’s holding firm went public this morning. Marcus Dre has stepped down from the board, and Matthias is facing up twenty-five years in federal prison for conspiracy and financial fraud. As for Fiona Vale and the Vanguard operatives—they’ve all been rounded up across three states. That flash drive you handed over... it was the cleanest, most airtight corruption case the DOJ has seen in a decade.”
Serena let out a long, peaceful breath, feeling a massive weight lift from her shoulders. “And our privacy?”
“Completely protected,” Miller nodded. “Your name is legally sealed from the public tabloids. You’re officially a hero, Mrs. Dre—though I imagine you’ll be dropping the ‘Dre’ part soon enough.”
“As soon as the paperwork clears,” Serena agreed with a quiet laugh.
After Miller stepped out to give them privacy, Serena gazed down at the sleeping infant in her arms. The nightmare at the Dre estate felt like a lifetime ago. Matthias had thought his betrayal and secret diamond necklaces were the most dangerous things in her world. He had underestimated her strength, her intelligence, and her fierce, unwavering love as a mother.

“It’s just you and me now, sweetheart. And we’re going to be just fine.”
