Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm at the Dre EstateThe majestic Dre estate loomed against the frigid Connecticut winter night, its towering stone facade illuminated by warm holiday lights that cast long, shivering shadows across the freshly fallen snow. Inside the grand ballroom, sixty of Greenwich’s elite—bankers, real estate moguls, corporate attorneys, and board chairmen—mingled in a haze of champagne bubbles, orchestral strings, and polite, calculated laughter.

For thirty-two-week pregnant Serena Carter, however, the glittering gala felt less like a celebration and more like a pressure cooker. Her swollen feet throbbed mercilessly against the high-end leather of her heels, and her unborn daughter stirred restlessly beneath her deep burgundy silk dress, as if sensing the electric tension crackling through the air.
For forty-three minutes, Serena had stood alone near the roaring marble fireplace, watching the glittering spectacle unfold. Then, the heavy oak front doors swung open.
Matthias Dre entered, brushing wet snowflakes from the shoulders of his tailored black overcoat. But he was not alone. Clinging to his arm was Fiona Vale, dazzling in an ivory backless evening gown that clung to her frame like liquid moonlight. Resting against her throat was a breathtaking diamond choker—a piece Serena recognized instantly. Three weeks ago, while trying to print pediatrician paperwork from Matthias’s laptop, Serena had stumbled upon the hidden hotel receipt from New Haven and the jewelry invoice tucked behind it. Matthias had claimed he was in Boston for an emergency corporate merger. Instead, he had been buying luxury diamonds for his mistress.
When Matthias spotted Serena across the room, a flicker of cold calculation crossed his handsome face. He disentangled himself from Fiona and walked over, offering a practiced, hollow smile.
“Serena,” he murmured, leaning down to plant a perfunctory kiss on her cheek. “You made it.”
“I drove myself,” Serena replied, her voice eerily calm.
“I was going to pick you up.”
“You said you were busy with a situation downtown.”
Matthias’s jaw tightened. He glanced nervously toward Fiona, who was already accepting a flute of champagne from a passing waiter.
“Keep your voice down, Serena. Fiona is handling communications for the Hensley acquisition. Several people here tonight are involved.”
“At Christmas?” Serena asked, her grey eyes locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity. “Is the diamond necklace business too?”
Matthias froze. For a fraction of a second, the polished mask slipped, revealing the raw, startled panic of a man whose carefully constructed secrets were unraveling. But recovery came fast.
“What necklace?” he demanded, his voice dropping an octave.
Serena didn’t flinch. She rested a protective hand over her swollen belly. Matthias had no idea that his petty infidelity was the least of his worries tonight. Three days ago, an anonymous envelope had arrived at her post office box containing a blueprint of the Dre estate, a schedule of the party, and a chilling handwritten note: Collateral losses within acceptable parameters.
Someone wasn't just exposing Matthias’s affair. Someone was targeting the Dre family empire—and everyone inside this mansion was in the crosshairs.
“Since you brought someone,” Serena whispered, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips, “I brought someone too.”

Matthias went entirely rigid. “What?”
Serena turned her gaze toward the grand entrance as the massive oak doors creaked open once more, and for the first time all evening, the color drained completely from Matthias’s face.
