Chapter 4 - The Fortress on the LakeAt 1:15 AM, the Maybach glided smoothly through the wrought-iron security gates of the Vitali Estate overlooking Lake Minnetonka.

The estate was a breathtaking masterpiece of stone and glass, surrounded by high walls, towering pine trees, and broad-shouldered men in dark suits patrolling the sunlit courtyard.
Inside the grand foyer, a massive stone fireplace crackled with roaring oak logs, casting a warm amber light across soaring wood-beamed ceilings and priceless art.
An older, elegant woman in a dark dress—Mrs. Martha, the estate manager—hurried down the hall carrying warm towels and hot chamomile tea.
"Mr. Leandro!" Mrs. Martha spoke warmly, her sharp eyes softening as she took in my simple department-store dress and the pale exhaustion on my face. "The master suite in the east wing has been fully prepared."
"Thank you, Martha," Leandro replied, taking off his heavy dark coat and handing it to a guard. "Have Dr. Vance prepare a soothing ointment for Clare's heels. She's been standing in uncomfortable shoes all evening."
I looked down at my feet in surprise. I hadn't even realized my cheap heels had rubbed raw red marks against my ankles.
Leandro guided me into a warm, cozy sitting room overlooking the dark lake, gently setting me down into a plush leather armchair near the fire.
He dropped onto one knee flat on the oriental rug before my chair—a massive, feared crime boss kneeling before an entry-level graphics assistant—his long, broad fingers carefully, reverently taking off my cheap heels, exposing my bruised feet.
His touch was unexpectedly, agonizingly gentle, contradicting every terrifying story I had ever heard about him.
"You don't have to do this, Leandro," I whispered softly, watching his dark hair catch the firelight.
Leandro raised his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine.
"I want to do this, Clare," he corrected quietly. "I spent four years hiding in this dark house because I believed my face made me a monster. Tonight... you gave me back my pride."
"You were never a monster, Leandro," I said softly, reaching out my hand to gently, bravely stroke the pale scar running along his jawline.
May you like
Leandro went completely still under my touch, his breath catching in his throat, his dark eye closing as he leaned into the warmth of my palm.
"Stay with me, Clare," Leandro confessed, his baritone dropping into a low, velvet rhythm that made my heart leap against my ribs. "Let me show you what it feels like to be cherished."
