Chapter 1 - The Voice that Silenced MinneapolisThe soaring crystal chandeliers of the Grand Venetian Ballroom seemed to dim under the weight of Leandro Vitali’s voice.

Every silver fork froze mid-air. The nervous giggles from Blair Kensington’s table withered into silent, breathless terror. Across the marble floor, Wesley Harkort stood paralyzed, his raised champagne glass trembling so violently that amber bubbles spilled over his knuckles, dripping onto his three-thousand-dollar suit.

Leandro didn't release my hand. His broad, calloused fingers held mine with an unshakeable, protective firmness.

Up close, beneath the glittering light, the pale, jagged scars tracing down the left side of his jawline to his temple didn't make him look monstrous. They gave his handsome, severe face an edge of absolute, forged steel. His one fully open dark eye burned with a quiet, lethal authority that made the entire Midwest elite look like frail, shivering children.

"Four years ago," Leandro spoke, his deep baritone carrying effortlessly to every corner of the silent room, "I survived a crash that left me with these marks. Since that night, many of you in this room have looked at me with pity, with disgust, or with fear."

He turned his head slowly, his piercing gaze sweeping across Blair, Wesley, and the board members sitting nearby.

"And tonight," Leandro continued, every word dropped into the room like a heavy anvil, "you thought it would be amusing to seat Miss Clare Donnelly beside me. You believed that pairing a woman whose beauty you are too blind to appreciate with a man whose face you are too cowardly to look at would create a punchline for your pathetic little evening."

Blair’s face went paper-white. She gripped her silk napkin so hard her manicured nails turned blue.

Leandro turned back to me, his dark eye softening with a sudden, breathtaking warmth that sent a wild, electrifying pulse straight through my chest.

"You were wrong," Leandro announced cleanly, his voice echoing under the high ceiling. "Because Clare Donnelly is the only person in this room who possesses a soul worth respecting. And from this moment forward... anyone who treats her with disrespect treats the Vitali family as an enemy."

A collective, breathless gasp rippled through the three hundred guests.

Wesley’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers. CRASH!

The crystal shattered against the marble floorboards, spattering sparkling wine across Blair’s designer gown, but no one laughed. Nobody dared to breathe as Leandro turned, gently tucking my trembling hand securely into the crook of his broad elbow, and led me out onto the center of the dance floor.
