Chapter 4 - The Confession That Changes EverythingThe silence in the massive loft office was suffocating.

Ethan slowly set his crystal tumbler of scotch down on the mahogany desk, never breaking eye contact with me. He looked exhausted. Dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and the sharp stubble along his jawline spoke of days without proper sleep.
"Dante," Ethan commanded without looking away from me. "Wait outside."
"Boss—"
"Now, Dante."
Dante cast one worried glance in my direction before slipping out the heavy oak door, clicking it shut behind him.
Ethan stepped out from behind the desk, walking toward me with that slow, predatory grace that had both fascinated and terrified me for a decade. He stopped two feet away, towering over me, his scent—sandalwood, amber, and expensive bourbon—washing over my senses.
"You shouldn't be here," Ethan said, his voice dangerously low. "The moment you walked out of that attorney's office, you were supposed to be safe. You were supposed to be miles away from this filth."
"Dante told me about the photograph," I said, holding my ground, refusing to shrink back under his intense gaze. "Someone left a picture of me with a red X across my face on your desk. And you thought what? That you could hide me in an apartment with a tail and pretend nothing was happening?"
Ethan’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "I am handling it."
"By drinking scotch in a dark room while your enemies leave calling cards in your private sanctuary?" I challenged, my voice rising. "Ethan, we were married for three years! Do you really think I don't know how your world works? When a rival syndicate starts making threats like this, they don't stop with a picture. They test your perimeter. They look for weaknesses."
"You are not a weakness," he growled, taking a sudden step forward, his hands gripping my upper arms. His touch was firm, desperate, radiating a fierce heat. "You are my past, Emma. That's all. You signed the papers."
"I signed the papers because you stopped seeing me!" I fired back, tears of frustration stinging the corners of my eyes. "You pushed me out! You built your empire and left me to rattle around a empty mansion while you played God with half the country!"
Ethan flinched as if I had struck him physically. His hands slowly slid down my arms, his fingers trembling slightly before dropping to his sides. He turned away, running a hand over his face, letting out a ragged sigh.
"You're right," he muttered, his voice hollow. "I failed you as a husband. I gave you my absence and expected you to be grateful for the wealth that bought it. That's why I let you go, Emma. Because you deserved a life that didn't smell like gunpowder and fear."
I watched him standing there in the dim light of his fortress—the most feared man in America, broken down by his own guilt.
For a split second, my resolve wavered. I wanted to step forward, wrap my arms around his broad shoulders, and tell him everything. I wanted to lean into his strength and let him protect me.
No.
If I told him now, while his empire was under active siege from an unknown enemy, he wouldn't just protect me. He would lock me in a bulletproof vault. He would treat our child as his ultimate vulnerability, and the stress would tear him apart.
I needed to protect my baby first. I needed to figure out who was hunting us before Ethan found out he had a biological heir caught in the crossfire.
"I'm not staying here, Ethan," I said steadily, stepping back toward the door. "I came to tell you that I know about the threat. But I'm going back to my apartment. I can take care of myself."
Ethan spun around, his eyes flashing with sudden, terrifying fury. "You think I'm going to let you walk back out into the crosshairs? Have you lost your mind?"
"What are you going to do?" I challenged, crossing my arms. "Lock me in a cell? Arrest me? We're divorced, Ethan. You don't get to give me orders anymore."
Before he could answer, the entire building shuddered.
BOOM.
The deafening roar of an explosion echoed from the lower levels of the warehouse, rattling the reinforced windows and killing the overhead lights instantly. Emergency backup generators kicked on a second later, bathing the loft in a harsh, pulsing red glow.

Ethan’s expression morphed from anger into lethal, absolute calm.
"Stay behind the desk," he ordered, his hand diving beneath his coat to pull a heavy, black Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster with practiced ease. "Do not move an inch."
