Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Sector 4The heavy stainless-steel doors of the kitchen slammed shut behind them with a heavy, metallic CLANG.

Sophia immediately threw a heavy steel prep table across the handles, jamming a meat cleaver into the latch frame with practiced, effortless efficiency.

Nicolo backed against the tile wall, clutching his bruised ribs, his dark eyes wide as he stared at the woman standing before him.

She tore off her stained apron, tossing it onto the stove burners, revealing a dark tactical vest concealed beneath her simple cotton blouse. She reached beneath the prep sink, pulling out a sealed, waterproof pelican case bound by a biometric thumb-lock.

CLICK.

The heavy case popped open. Inside lay three spare high-capacity magazines, an encrypted satellite phone, a military-grade medical kit, and a leather dossier stamped with a red wax seal: GHOST PROTOCOL — AGENT SOFIA VANCE.

Nicolo’s breath trapped in his throat like a lump of lead.

"Vance...?" Nicolo stammered, his mind racing through two decades of global intelligence reports. "Sophia Vance...? The Ghost of Sector 4?!"

Five years ago, a legendary operative known only as "Sophia" had single-handedly dismantled the Russian Bratva's secondary black-market supply lines across Eastern Europe. Sixty-seven heavily armed syndicate enforcers had tried to ambush her in a Warsaw safehouse.

None of them lived to tell the story.

The global underworld called her the "Ghost"—a phantom assassin whose identity was so heavily guarded that even the CIA and Interpol had zero photographs on file.

And for six months, she had been serving him lukewarm espresso and sweeping up muffin crumbs at his favorite Brooklyn café.

"You've heard of me," Sophia noted flatly, ejecting her empty magazine with a sleek, metallic CLACK, slapping a fresh twenty-round clip into place.

"You're an operative!" Nicolo gasped, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Why the hell were you working as a waitress in my café for six months?!"

Sophia turned her head slowly, her cold, striking hazel eyes locking onto his face with a look that dropped the room's temperature below zero.

"Because six months ago, your brother Marco paid three million dollars to a private intelligence group to have you assassinated, Nicolo," Sophia revealed smoothly.

The air was completely sucked out of Nicolo’s lungs. He stumbled back against the tile, his face turning an ugly, paper-white shade of gray. "Marco...? My brother...? No... no, you're lying! Marco texted me twenty minutes ago! He said he was stuck in traffic!"

"He isn't stuck in traffic, Nicolo," Sophia corrected flatly, pulling a sleek digital tablet from her pelican case, throwing it flat onto the counter before him. "He's sitting in the master suite at the St. Regis Hotel, sipping scotch with Don Valenti, waiting for the news that your body has been recovered from Café Luna."

Nicolo looked down at the glowing tablet screen.

Displayed on the interface were live intercepted satellite audio logs and bank transfer receipts:

WIRE TRANSFER RECEIPT ($3,000,000): Authorized by Marco Bandi to the Valenti Mercenary Group.

INTERCEPTED AUDIO (3:10 PM): Capturing Marco Bandi instructing the hit team to "wipe out the entire café, leave no witnesses, and make sure Nicolo is dead."

"Marco..." Nicolo rasped out, a raw, agonizing sob of total betrayal breaking from his chest. "My own blood..."

"He wanted your docks, your title, and your empire, Mr. Bandi," Sophia said softly, adjusting her tactical harness. "And my agency hired me to make sure you lived long enough to tear his down."
