Chapter 1 - The Shadow Behind the CounterThe thunder of high-caliber rifle fire still hummed in the air, a terrifying vibration that rattled the brass fixtures of Café Luna. Dust, white drywall powder, and shattered glass hung in the air like winter fog, catching the cold Brooklyn sunlight streaming through the ruined front windows.

Nicolo Bandi lay flat on his back behind the overturned marble tabletop, his expensive Italian suit coat ruined by coffee and floor grease. His heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer.
For thirty-four years, Nicolo had ruled the Brooklyn waterfront as the senior capo of the Bandi Family. Men bowed when he walked into the room; rival syndicates paid tributes just to operate near his docks. He was accustomed to fear, to power, to absolute control.
Yet right now, he was pinned to the floor by a twenty-six-year-old girl who had spilled cold espresso on his cuffs twenty minutes ago.
Sophia sat crouched over him in a low, feline combat stance. Her faded apron was torn at the waist, revealing a sleek black kydex holster wrapped tight around her thigh.
In her right hand, she held a weapon Nicolo had only seen in high-level tactical dossiers: a custom-built, suppressed SIG Sauer P322 with custom recoil-milling and night sights. Her hands didn't tremble. Her breathing was slow, rhythmic, and perfectly controlled—a machine in human skin.
"Stay down, Bandi," Sophia instructed softly. Her voice wasn't the timid, apologetic squeak he had mocked all afternoon. It was flat, velvet-cold, and dripping with an absolute, lethal authority that made his blood freeze.
"You..." Nicolo choked out, his throat dry as bone. "Who the hell are you...?"
BOOM!
The heavy oak front doors tore off their brass hinges as six more shooters in un-marked black tactical armor, night-vision mounts, and suppressed carbines breached the threshold.
"FLANK THE BAR!" a voice barked through a tactical comms unit. "TARGET IS NICOLO BANDI! NO SURVIVORS!"
These weren't local street enforcers. Their movement was clean, professional, and military-grade—the unmistakable signature of the Valenti Syndicate's elite mercenary wing, hired from Eastern Europe to wipe out the Bandi leadership in one decisive strike.
The lead shooter swept his carbine toward the overturned table, his laser sight painting a crimson dot straight on Nicolo’s chest.
Before the mercenary could squeeze the trigger, Sophia moved.
She didn't jump; she exploded into motion with blinding, fluid speed.
THWIP-THWIP!
Two suppressed shots echoed like quiet double-clicks.
The lead shooter’s visor shattered inward. A pair of crimson blooms erupted directly between his eyes. He collapsed backward onto the floorboards before his brass casings even hit the ground.
Without slowing down, Sophia rolled over the broken marble tabletop, her weapon tracking smooth as a rail system.
THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!
Two more shooters dropped in the doorway, double-tapped through the neck throat-gaps of their armor with terrifying, surgical precision.
Nicolo’s jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound horror.
In less than three seconds, the clumsy, forgetful waitress had neutralized three heavy assault mercenaries with three double-taps—a ninety-nine percent kill-ratio under fire that only top-tier black-ops operators possessed.
"Move!" Sophia commanded, grabbing Nicolo by his collar with a grip like forged steel, yanking his six-foot frame up off the floor as bullets tore through the plaster behind them.
"Where?!" Nicolo yelled over the deafening roar of automatic fire.

Sophia offered a dark, razor-sharp smile—a look of pure, lethal confidence that made the hair on his arms stand up.
"To the kitchen, Mr. Bandi," Sophia purred cleanly. "Where I keep the real coffee."
