Chapter 1 - The Midnight ConfessionThe quiet inside the grand twin bedroom of the Mercer Estate felt heavy, fragile, and charged with an intensity that made the hair on my arms stand up.

Adrian Mercer stood over the bed, his tall, imposing frame casting a long shadow across the plush carpet. The feared Don of Boston’s south side, a man whose name made hardened syndicate bosses speak in hushed tones, was standing before me with trembling hands, his dark eyes brimming with a raw, agonizing grief he had buried for twelve agonizing months.
"Adrian...?" I whispered, my voice barely a thread of sound amidst the soft, rhythmic breathing of six-year-old Lily and Emma.
Adrian reached out, gently pulling an armchair closer to the edge of the twin bed, dropping onto the plush seat as if the weight of his own body was too heavy to carry. He buried his face in his broad palms for three agonizing seconds before looking back up at me.
"Everyone in this city believes Rebecca died of a sudden cardiac arrest following her prolonged illness," Adrian spoke, his baritone voice rough, raspy, and stripped of every drop of his usual sovereign authority. "The media reported it. The doctors signed the death certificate. Even my own lieutenants believe that narrative."
My heart took a sharp, uneasy leap against my ribs. "Was it... was it not cardiac arrest?"
"It was," Adrian replied softly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable, terrifying clarity. "But it wasn't natural."
I froze. The breath caught in my throat, my fingers tightening around the edge of the blanket.
"On her final night," Adrian continued, his voice trembling as he looked down at his daughters' peaceful, sleeping faces, "Rebecca called me into this very room at three in the morning. The girls were asleep, just like they are right now. She looked at me, holding a encrypted flash drive in her hand, and told me that she had been poisoned."
My jaw dropped in total, speech-bound horror. "Poisoned...?"
"By someone inside my own inner circle," Adrian revealed, every word dropped like frozen iron onto the floorboards. "Rebecca discovered a year-long financial laundering scheme operating out of my primary harbor terminals—a scheme orchestrated by my late brother's former partner, Marcus Vane, to funnel illegal narcotics through Boston under my family's name. When Rebecca threatened to bring the files to me... Marcus had a medical insider introduce a tasteless, slow-acting neuro-toxin into her daily IV treatments at the private clinic."
A cold, sickening wave of nausea washed over my skin. "The girls... did they know?"
"They didn't know about the poison," Adrian wept quietly, a single, heavy tear spilling over his lash, cutting a clean track through the shadow on his jaw. "But on her final night, Rebecca knew her heart was failing. She wrapped both girls in her arms, just like you did tonight, told them the story about the foxes under the winter stars, and sang that lullaby to keep them calm while she slipped away."
The pieces of the nightmare slammed together in my mind with brutal, heartbreaking precision.
Lily’s fear of closed doors. Emma’s inability to sleep without every light burning. Their frantic, desperate questions about whether their mother had forgotten them.

They hadn't just lost their mother to an illness. Their little hearts held the subconscious trauma of lying in this very bed, listening to their mother’s heart slow down to a permanent stop while she sang them to sleep.
"For an entire year, Claire," Adrian whispered, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair from Emma's forehead, "my daughters haven't slept through the night because every time they closed their eyes, their minds remembered the freezing silence of that final lullaby. Until tonight. Until you sang it to them."
