Chapter 3 - The Gathering at the ManorBy 6:00 PM, the atmospheric pressure over Boston plummeted, bringing a dense, freezing fog off the harbor that enveloped the stone cliffs of Beacon Hill in a thick white shroud.

Inside the grand dining room of the Mercer Estate, twenty broad-shouldered men in dark tailored suits sat around the long mahogany conference table. These were the senior captains of the Mercer syndicate—men who controlled logistics, shipping terminals, and private security networks across New England.

Sitting at the head of the table, wearing an immaculate dark suit, his posture tall, fluid, and sovereign, was Adrian.

I stood near the second-floor balcony railing overlooking the foyer, holding Lily and Grace’s small hands as they ate warm cookies Mrs. Gable had baked for them. The girls were dressed in cozy fleece pajamas, their cheeks rosy, their laughter light and silver as they played with a wooden toy train.

Standing near the front entrance of the dining room, holding a thick folder, was Marcus Vane—a fifty-two-year-old senior captain with slicked-back gray hair, sharp blue eyes, and a arrogant, condescending smirk that made my skin crawl.

"Adrian, my dear Don," Marcus spoke smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet foyer. "The port authority requires your signature on the Pier 14 transfer by midnight. We have thirty million dollars in commercial cargo waiting to clear customs."

Adrian didn't pick up his pen. He sat back in his plush leather chair, crossing his legs, his dark eyes fixed on Marcus with a cold, unblinking intensity that made the surrounding lieutenants shift uncomfortably in their seats.

"The cargo on Pier 14 doesn't belong to the Mercer syndicate, Marcus," Adrian stated flatly, his baritone dropping into a low, lethal register that echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Marcus’s arrogant smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about? The manifests were cleared by your late brother's estate trust."

"My late brother's trust was liquidated six months ago, Marcus," Adrian revealed, pulling a thick black binder from beneath his chair, dropping it flat onto the table with an iron THUD. "Along with the private medical accounts you used to bribe the staff at Northwestern Memorial Clinic twelve months ago."

The entire room went dead, breathless silent.

Marcus’s face drained of color, his hand twitching instinctively toward his inner coat pocket.

Up on the balcony, my heart slammed against my ribs. I pulled Lily and Emma gently behind my skirt, shielding them from the balcony floorboards.

"You think you can prove that in a court, Mercer?!" Marcus snarled, his voice rising into a sharp, desperate panic. "Your wife died of heart failure! The medical reports are sealed!"

"The medical reports were unsealed by the Federal Attorney General’s Office at four o'clock this afternoon, Marcus," Adrian replied smoothly, standing up from his chair, his six-foot-four frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the table. "Along with your primary financial proxies in the Cayman Islands."
