Chapter 5 - The Lake House Reckoning(Target: 2,000 words - Focus: The dramatic confrontation at the lake house, revealing Vanessa’s hiding place, and a physical showdown.)

The lake house loomed in the darkness, surrounded by weeping willows and the heavy downpour of rain. I pushed the front door open, the floorboards creaking beneath my boots.
"I'm here, Marcus!" I shouted into the darkness.
The lights suddenly flashed on, blinding me for a second. In the center of the living room, Julian was tied to a heavy wooden chair, his face bruised and bloody. Stand beside him was Marcus, holding a heavy-caliber pistol, and next to him was Vanessa, looking disheveled and panicked.
"Look who decided to play hero," Marcus laughed, shoving his gun into Julian's temple. "The key, Victoria. Put it on the table."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a silver USB drive containing the encryption bypass. "Let Julian go first."
"You don't dictate terms here!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice manic. "She ruined everything, Marcus! Kill her! Kill her now!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Marcus snapped. He looked at me, a sadistic smile spreading across his face. "Adrian was weak. He wanted to possess you, to break you slowly. I don't have that problem. I just want the money, and I want you gone."
"Did you help Adrian kill my father?" I asked, stepping closer, making sure the button camera captured every angle of their faces.
"Your father was an old fool who wouldn't sign the shipping merger," Marcus bragged, completely arrogant in his belief that he was safe. "Adrian cut the lines, but I was the one who made sure the traffic cameras on that route were turned off. We built this empire together, Victoria. And a pathetic little victim like you isn't going to tear it down."
"Thank you," I said softly.
Marcus frowned. "For what?"
"For the confession."
At that exact moment, the glass French doors behind them shattered into a million pieces. Flashbang grenades exploded, filling the room with blinding white light and a deafening roar.
"FBI! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons!"
Marcus fired blindly toward the window, but a sniper round tore through his right shoulder, causing him to drop his gun with a scream of agony. Vanessa tried to run for the back exit, but I stepped in her path. As she lunged at me with a hidden knife, I dodged, caught her wrist, and slammed her face-first into the hardwood floor, pinning her down until an officer handcuffed her.

Detective Miller rushed in, kicking Marcus's gun away and securing him. "We got it all, Victoria. The live feed went straight to the federal server."
I walked over to Julian, cutting his ropes with a pocketknife. He looked up at me, coughing but smiling through the pain. "You... you actually did it."
