Chapter 2 - The Midnight Shadows(Target: 2,000 words - Focus: Victoria navigating the immediate legal storm, the reading of the hidden files, and the discovery of a dangerous ally.)

By midnight, the cathedral was empty, but the war had just shifted to the federal precinct. I sat in a cold interrogation room, a heavy woolen blanket draped over my shoulders, sipping bitter black coffee. The ivory slip was covered by a trench coat, but I refused to change. I wanted the police, the lawyers, and the world to see what Adrian had done.

My legal counsel, Julian Vance, entered the room with a stack of files. Julian was my father's most trusted attorney, a man who had been sidelined by Adrian’s hostile takeover of our family estate.

"The evidence is ironclad, Victoria," Julian said, his voice laced with awe and concern. "The financial fraud documents alone are enough to freeze all of Blackwell's assets. But the memory card... how did you get it?"

"Adrian kept it in a biometric safe inside his private study at the estate," I explained, my voice hollow. "He thought I was weak, that his beatings had broken my spirit. Every time he locked me in that room after an assault, he thought he was punishing me. He didn't realize I was watching him enter the code. I used a latent fingerprint powder I bought online, copied his prints using silicone molds, and waited for the night he was too drunk to lock the secondary deadbolt."

Julian shook his head, a mix of horror and admiration in his eyes. "You played a dangerous game. If he had caught you..."

"He would have killed me, just like he killed my father," I said flatly. "It was either die fighting or die waiting."

Suddenly, the door opened, and Detective Miller walked in, her expression grim. "Ms. Sterling, we have a problem."

My heart seized. "Did his lawyers post bail?"

"No. His asset forfeiture prevents him from using his main accounts, but Adrian has deep connections," Miller said, sitting down. "An hour ago, the transport van carrying Vanessa to the detention center was rammed by an unmarked SUV. Vanessa was extracted. She’s gone."

I stood up, the blanket slipping from my shoulders. "Adrian didn't do that from a holding cell. He has outside help."

"We believe it’s his brother, Marcus Blackwell," Julian warned, his face darkening. "The black sheep of the family. He runs the underworld side of their shipping business. If Marcus is involved, this is no longer just a corporate trial. It’s an active hit on your life."

Miller looked at me seriously. "We need to put you in a safe house, Victoria."

"No," I replied, my jaw tightening. "A safe house makes me a target in a cage. Tomorrow morning, the board of Sterling-Blackwell Enterprises meets to vote on the CEO succession. If I am not there, Adrian's proxies will take control of my father's company. I am going to that boardroom."
