Chapter 7 - The Dawn We DeservedSix months later.

The sun was setting over the Italian Riviera, painting the Mediterranean Sea in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

Standing on the stone balcony of a sprawling cliffside villa in Amalfi, I wore a flowing white silk dress that caught the gentle evening breeze. Down in the courtyard below, soft acoustic guitar music drifted upward, mingling with the laughter of close friends and family who had gathered to celebrate the wedding of the year.

And running across the manicured lawn, chasing a small golden retriever puppy with wild, joyful laughter, was a little four-year-old girl in a white lace dress.

“She’s going to wear out the puppy before dinner even starts,” a deep, familiar voice murmured warmly against my ear.

Strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me securely against a broad, solid chest. I leaned back into Lorenzo, resting my head against his shoulder as I watched our daughter play.

“She has your energy,” I smiled, turning slightly in his embrace to wrap my arms around his neck. “I don't know where she gets it.”

Lorenzo chuckled softly, pressing a tender kiss to my temple. He looked down at me with an expression of such complete, unreserved devotion that it still sometimes took my breath away.

“She gets it from her mother,” Lorenzo replied smoothly. “The bravest woman I’ve ever known.”

I smiled, resting my hand over his where it rested on my stomach—where a new life was quietly growing, safe, protected, and surrounded by unconditional love.

The sound of that little three-year-old voice calling a ruthless mafia boss "daddy" in the dim silence of a Chicago library used to feel like a nightmare that would destroy us all.

Now, looking out at the shimmering sea and the family we had fought so desperately to build, I realized it was the best thing that had ever happened to us.

It wasn't the end of our story.

It was the beginning of everything.
