Chapter 3 - The Alliance of the DamnedTen minutes later, Victor Hale was bound tightly to a steel-framed office chair with heavy industrial zip-ties, a bleeding lip, and terror etched into every wrinkle of his aged face.

Dante stood by the mahogany desk, holding Victor’s encrypted satellite phone in his hand. The screen glowed with an active data stream connected to an off-site server in downtown Chicago.

“You’re going to type the administrative override code,” Dante instructed, his tone devoid of all human warmth. “And you are going to deactivate the telemetry feed right now.”

“I can’t!” Victor sobbed, shaking his head frantically. “The override requires a dual-key authorization! The second key is held by Isabella’s brother, Marcus Romano! If I shut it down unilaterally without Marcus’s biometrics, the backup protocol will trigger a localized neuro-shock! It will paralyze your respiratory system within three minutes!”

Dante stared at him, calculating every variable with the ruthless precision of a master tactician. For three years, they had woven a spiderweb of digital control around his mind, making him believe he was broken so he would never look up to see who was pulling the strings.

The heavy oak doors of the study suddenly pushed open.

Dante didn't turn around. He didn't need to. He heard the click of high heels on the hardwood floor and the familiar, sweet scent of gardenia perfume.

“Dante, darling?” Isabella Romano’s voice drifted into the room, melodic and slightly breathless. “Victor called security from the corridor—he said something about an emergency—my God, what happened to your door?!”

Isabella stepped around the shattered remains of the doorway, stopping dead in her tracks as she saw Victor bound to the chair and Dante standing by the desk with a face carved out of ice.

Her immaculate smile vanished. Her hazel eyes darted from Victor to the open laptop on the desk, and finally, to Dante’s right hand, which rested casually on the grip of his custom Sig Sauer pistol.

“Dante...” Isabella whispered, taking a cautious step backward. “Put the gun down. Let me explain.”

“Explain what, Isabella?” Dante asked smoothly, turning his head to look at her. “Explain how you and Marcus sold our shipping routes to the Falcone family while convincing me I was too mentally unstable to review the quarterly audits? Or explain how my evening whiskey was laced with cognitive suppressants to keep the tracker from registering my natural adrenaline spikes?”

Isabella’s face drained of color. The fragile, elegant socialite mask melted away in a single heartbeat, replaced by the hard, calculating ambition of a syndicate predator.

“You were supposed to be a figurehead, Dante!” Isabella spat out, her voice losing its sweetness, turning sharp and venomous. “The Palermo bombing should have killed you! When you survived, you were too dangerous, too unpredictable! My family wanted control of the North American ports, and you stood in the way! The chip didn't make you a slave—it made you manageable!”

She reached instinctively for her evening clutch, her fingers sliding toward a concealed panic button that linked directly to her brother Marcus’s private enforcer squad stationed at the front gates.

Dante was faster.

Before her fingers could press the button, Dante drew his pistol and fired a single round through the walnut floorboards one inch from her stiletto heel.

CRACK!

Isabella shrieked, dropping her clutch onto the floor as she jumped backward, her hands flying to her mouth.

“Don’t,” Dante warned, his voice like the grinding of tectonic plates. “Your brother and his enforcers are currently being disarmed by my loyal security detail at the front gates. Your little coup ended the second a five-year-old child pointed out the metal bug in my neck.”

Isabella trembled, realizing she had lost. Absolute power, built on deceit, had evaporated in less than an hour.

“What are you going to do to us?” she whispered, tears of rage spilling down her cheeks.

“You are going to sit in this room,” Dante said, sliding the pistol back into his shoulder holster, “and watch me dismantle everything you and Victor built.”
