Chapter 7 - The Blue Rabbit’s KingdomThree months later, the Swiss Alps were a breathtaking panorama of emerald valleys, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks glittering brilliantly under the afternoon sun.

The private estate outside of Zurich was nothing like the cold, imposing fortress of Villa Moretti. Here, the house was built of warm timber and native stone, surrounded by sprawling gardens of wild lavender and alpine roses that filled the crisp mountain air with a sweet, soothing fragrance.

Inside the sunlit conservatory, three-year-old Emma sat on a plush velvet rug, busily feeding imaginary tea to a collection of stuffed animals, her beloved blue wool rabbit propped up proudly at the head of the table.

I stood by the open French doors, a steaming cup of tea in my hands, watching the sunlight dance across the mountain peaks. My old life as a housekeeper felt like a distant, faded dream from another lifetime. Here, there were no secret archives, no mafia trials, no hidden corridors of fear. There was only peace, laughter, and the quiet rhythm of a family finally safe.

Heavy footsteps approached from behind, followed by familiar, strong arms wrapping gently around my waist.

“You’re daydreaming again, Elena,” Alessandro murmured into my hair, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder. He had traded his black mafia suits for comfortable linen shirts and dark trousers, looking every bit the mountain estate owner rather than the feared boss of northern Italy.

“I’m just thinking about how far we’ve come,” I whispered, leaning back into his embrace, letting out a long, contented breath. “Sometimes it still feels like a dream.”

“It’s not a dream,” Alessandro assured me, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him. He reached up, gently brushing a lock of hair behind my ear. “It’s reality. And nobody will ever take it away from us.”

From across the room, Emma suddenly noticed us. Her eyes lit up with excitement.

“Mommy! Daddy!” she shouted, running across the hardwood floor as fast as her little legs could carry her, clutching the blue rabbit tightly in her right hand.

Alessandro dropped to one knee—just as he had done months ago on the marble floor of Villa Moretti—and scooped Emma up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air as she giggled with pure, unadulterated joy.

“Did you give Mr. Rabbit his tea, captain?” Alessandro asked, tickling her ribs until she squealed with laughter.

“Yes! And he says we all have to go outside right now!” Emma declared authoritatively, pointing a tiny finger toward the sunlit garden.

Alessandro looked up at me, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners with deep, abiding happiness. He extended his free hand toward me, an open invitation to step out into the brilliant afternoon light.

I took his hand, intertwining my fingers with his.

Together, hand in hand, with our daughter riding proudly on her father's shoulders and her little blue rabbit leading the way, we stepped out into the bright, beautiful sunshine of our forever.
