Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Master WingThe heavy oak double doors of the master residential wing were splintered down the middle. Splintered wood and shattered glass littered the polished parquet floor.

My breath caught in my throat. I broke away from Alessandro, running frantically into the master suite, screaming my daughter’s name.

“Emma! Emma!”

“Mommy!”

The desperate, tearful cry came from beneath the massive mahogany bed in the corner. I dropped to my knees, tearing back the heavy velvet dust ruffle. There was Emma, curled into a tight little ball, her face stained with tears, still clutching her blue wool rabbit like a lifeline.

I pulled her out into my arms, crushing her against my chest, sobbing uncontrollably as I kissed her forehead, her cheeks, her hair over and over again. “I’ve got you, baby. Mommy’s here. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

“Two men came in,” Emma sobbed into my shoulder, her little frame shaking. “They had big guns. They told me to be quiet. But I hid under the bed like we practiced during the storm drills.”

“You were so brave, sweetheart,” a deep, gentle voice said from behind us.

We turned to see Alessandro standing in the shattered doorway. His hands were clenched into tight fists, his knuckles white, his chest heaving with suppressed fury. Two of his loyal guards stood flanking him in the hallway, dragging the unconscious bodies of the rogue mercenaries who had dared breach the master wing.

Alessandro knelt down beside us. He didn't care about the dust on the floor or the blood on his sleeves. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray curl from Emma’s tear-stained cheek.

“You saved us all tonight, little one,” Alessandro whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. He touched the frayed ear of the blue rabbit resting in Emma’s small hand. “You and your brave little rabbit.”

Emma sniffled, wiping her nose on her sleeve just like she always did, and offered Alessandro a small, trusting smile. “You came back.”

“I told you I would,” Alessandro said softly, meeting her eyes. Then, he slowly stood up, turning his gaze toward me as I held our daughter tightly against my heart.

“This estate is no longer safe,” Alessandro said, his tone shifting into absolute, unarguable command. “Even with Marco and Vivian exposed, there are factions within the council who will try to use this chaos to strike. We leave for my private estate in the Swiss Alps before sunrise.”

“Your Swiss estate?” I repeated, stunned. “Alessandro, we are housekeepers. We belong—”

“You belong wherever I say you belong, Elena,” he interrupted gently, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating from his body. He reached out, placing his warm hand over mine where I held Emma. “For two years, you lived in the shadows of this house, protecting your daughter, asking for nothing, surviving against impossible odds. You are stronger than any soldier who has ever stood in my command.”

He looked down at Emma, then back into my eyes.

“Come with me. Not as staff. Not as guests. Stay with me. Build a real life here... where no one will ever dare hurt you again.”

The world outside the shattered window was turning from black to a deep, bruised violet as the first rays of dawn began to pierce the heavy mountain mist. The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a crisp, clean world washed in morning light.

I looked into Alessandro’s dark, unwavering eyes and saw the truth written there—not the cold, ruthless mafia boss the city feared, but a man who had finally found something worth fighting for, something real to protect.

I nodded slowly. “We’ll come.”
