Chapter 4 - The Betrayal WithinThe corridors of Villa Moretti were pitch black at two in the morning, save for the pale moonlight cutting through the tall Gothic windows. Alessandro moved with silent, lethal efficiency, leading me through the hidden service passages behind the main walls—hallways designed centuries ago for lords escaping political assassinations, now serving as our secret highway through the sprawling estate.

“Stay behind me,” Alessandro whispered over his shoulder, his hand resting comfortably on the grip of a silenced pistol tucked into his waistband.
I nodded, gripping the heavy iron flashlight he had handed me. My heart hammered against my ribs, echoing in my ears like a drumbeat of war. I kept thinking of Emma sleeping safely in the master wing, praying to whatever higher power listened that we would make it out of this night alive.
We reached a small, reinforced ventilation grille overlooking the sub-level archive room. Alessandro motioned for me to crouch down beside him.
Through the grated slats, the brightly lit archive room came into view. Standing beside the open steel vault door was Marco, the tall, imposing chief of security who had served the Moretti family for over a decade. He was rapidly stuffing bundles of documents and encrypted hard drives into a leather duffel bag.
Beside him stood a familiar figure draped in a silk robe—Vivian Romano. Her hair was messy, her makeup smeared, her face twisted in an ugly grimace of desperate greed.
“Hurry up, Marco!” Vivian hissed, tapping her diamond-ringed foot impatiently against the marble floor. “If Alessandro realizes I’m missing from the guest wing, we’re both dead!”
“Calm down, signora,” Marco replied in a low, gravelly voice, snapping the duffel bag shut. “The private helicopter is waiting at the north helipad. Once we cross into Swiss airspace with these ledgers, Moretti won't have enough leverage to touch us. The council will strip him of his title for financial negligence within forty-eight hours.”
“And what about the housekeeper and her brat?” Vivian spat venomously. “They saw too much tonight. I want them dealt with.”
“Consider it handled,” Marco smirked, reaching for a sleek black submachine gun resting on the nearest mahogany desk. “My men are already sweeping the west wing.”
Up in the shadows of the ventilation shaft, my blood turned to ice. The west wing. Emma was still sleeping in the west wing guest suite!
Before Alessandro could even register the threat, I shoved past the metal grate with a strength born of pure maternal terror, dropping silently onto the archive room floor below.
The heavy thud of my boots echoed off the stone walls.
Marco and Vivian spun around in absolute shock. Marco’s hand instinctively flew toward his weapon, but he was half a second too slow.
From the shadows of the vent above, Alessandro dropped down like a predatory cat, landing squarely on Marco’s shoulders and driving the heavy man crashing into the marble floor with bone-shattering force. The submachine gun flew from Marco’s grip, sliding skittering across the room.
“Marco,” Alessandro snarled, pinning the choking security chief to the ground with his knee pressed hard into his chest, his pistol drawn and pointed directly between Marco’s eyes. “Ten years of loyalty. Ten years of brotherhood. And you sold us out to the Roman syndicate for a handful of Swiss francs?”
Marco wheezed, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth, a cynical, defeated laugh escaping his lips. “You... you were getting soft, Alessandro. Too many humanitarian funds, too much legitimate business. The families wanted a return to the old ways. Vivian promised us a new empire.”
Alessandro cocked the pistol. The metallic click was deafening.
“Alessandro, wait!” Vivian screamed, stumbling backward until her back slammed against the reinforced steel vault door. Her face was bloodless, her hands trembling as she held up her hands in surrender. “Amore... please! It was all Marco’s idea! He manipulated me! I’m a Romano! My father will—’
“Your father is currently answering my questions in a secure room twenty miles away,” Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying, dead calm. He didn't look at Vivian; his eyes remained locked on the traitor beneath him. He signaled toward the doorway with a sharp flick of his head.
Two tactical guards, loyal to Alessandro to the death, rushed into the archive room, hauling Marco to his feet and shoving Vivian violently against the wall.
“Lock them in the lower holding cells,” Alessandro ordered coldly. “No food, no water, no visitors until the council tribunal tomorrow morning.”
As the guards dragged the screaming, thrashing couple away into the dark depths of the basement, Alessandro holstered his weapon and turned around. He looked at me, standing frozen near the desk, chest heaving with adrenaline.
“Elena,” he said softly, taking a quick step toward me. “Are you hurt?”
May you like
“Emma,” I gasped, the terror of what Marco had said crashing over me. “He said his men were sweeping the west wing! My daughter is still in the guest suite!”
Alessandro’s face drained of color. Without a single word, he grabbed my hand, and together, we sprinted out of the archive room, racing through the secret passages toward the heart of the mansion, praying we weren't too late.
