Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Master WingThe master residential wing of Villa Moretti felt less like a bedroom and more like a fortress carved out of history. High vaulted ceilings crossed by dark oak beams stretched above a massive mahogany bed draped in charcoal-gray velvet. Tall arched windows looked out over the moonlit gardens and the distant, restless expanse of the lake.

Emma was already fast asleep, tucked safely beneath a heavy goose-down duvet in the adjoining guest suite, her blue rabbit clutched tightly in her small arms.

I stood by the window, wrapping my arms around myself as the cold glass chilled my palms. My mind was spinning, untangling the terrifying reality of our new existence. Just forty-eight hours ago, my biggest worry was whether I would finish cleaning the ballroom before dawn or if the agency would dock my pay for a broken teacup. Now, I was living under the direct roof—and protection—of the most dangerous man in Italy, caught in the crosshairs of a mafia civil war.

A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door connecting the suite to the private hallway.

Before I could answer, the door pushed open. Alessandro entered, holding a secure encrypted tablet in one hand and a steaming mug of tea in the other. He had changed into a dark gray cashmere sweater, softening the harsh, intimidating silhouette he projected during the day, though the watchful alertness in his eyes remained unchanged.

“She’s sleeping?” he asked quietly, closing the door behind him with barely a click.

“Like a rock,” I replied, turning away from the window. I took the mug of tea he offered, letting the warmth seep into my cold fingers. “Thank you, Mr. Moretti. For... all of this. But I still don't understand why you’re risking your own standing by sheltering us. If the other families find out we’re staying in the master wing—”

“Let them find out,” Alessandro interrupted, walking over to the fireplace where a quiet blaze crackled. He set his tablet down on the mantel. “For three years, Mrs. Bennett, I have watched people in this house bow, scrape, lie, and plot behind my back. Every smile is calculated. Every alliance is transactional. When your daughter looked at me tonight and asked if I was all right... she didn't want my money, she didn't want my protection, and she certainly didn't care about my title.”

He turned to look at me, his expression softening in the amber firelight.

“For a second, I wasn't the head of a syndicate. I was just a man. And nobody has looked at me that way since my mother died when I was ten years old.”

I felt a lump form in my throat. Despite the fear gripping my chest, a deep, aching empathy stirred within me. I knew what it felt like to be surrounded by people and yet be completely, utterly alone.

“Her name is Elena,” I said softly.

Alessandro blinked, caught off guard. “Pardon?”

“My name. It’s Elena Bennett,” I clarified, offering a small, fragile smile. “You’ve been calling me Mrs. Bennett since the day I was hired. But I’m just Elena.”

Alessandro stared at me for a long moment, the name tasting foreign and tender on his tongue. “Elena,” he repeated, testing the syllables. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of his mouth. “It suits you.”

Suddenly, the encrypted tablet on the mantel buzzed violently, flashing a red warning light.

Alessandro’s entire demeanor shifted in a microsecond. The softness vanished, replaced instantly by the lethal focus of a predator. He strode across the room, snatched the tablet, and swiped across the screen.

“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping forward.

“Security feed from the east perimeter,” Alessandro said, his eyes scanning the rapid lines of data flashing across the screen. “Someone just bypassed the biometric locks on the secondary archive vault. The exact vault where the master financial ledgers are kept.”

My blood ran cold. “Vivian?”

“No,” Alessandro said, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “Vivian is locked in her quarters under heavy guard. Whoever bypassed that lock had a master override code. A code that only one other person in this house possesses.”

He looked up from the tablet, meeting my eyes with a chilling realization.

“My chief of security, Marco. He’s the leak.”
