Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden VendorBy 2:00 AM, the study had been transformed into an impenetrable command center.

Outside the estate grounds, ten armed security vehicles guarded the perimeter, while a private tactical team led by Sebastian’s chief security officer, Marcus Vance, secured every entrance and server room.

Inside, three-year-old Nori was fast asleep on a plush sofa in the adjoining private library, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, holding her gray stuffed rabbit tightly. Clara sat beside her, sipping a warm mug of tea, her hands still trembling from the shock of the evening.

In the center of the study, Bridget Colton—a sharp, brilliant prosecutor who acted as Sebastian’s independent legal strategist— tensed over three heavy black binders of financial records.

"Sebastian," Bridget spoke, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction as she tapped her tablet display. "The digital and paper trace on Vendor 814 is complete. And it’s far worse than simple embezzlement."

Sebastian stood by the hearth, a glass of untouched bourbon in his hand. "Tell me."

"Vendor 814 was a dummy holding shell registered in the Cayman Islands under the name of Owen Pierce’s brother-in-law," Bridget explained, sliding ledgers flat onto the mahogany table.

THE EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Owen Pierce systematically siphoned $42 million from Sebastian’s legitimate freight transport operations into offshore accounts over four years.

THE MURDER OF DANIEL CARTER: Forensic logs from Daniel Carter’s laptop—recovered from an encrypted thumb drive hidden inside Nori’s stuffed rabbit—proved Daniel had discovered the $42 million theft two days before his death.

THE TAMPERED VEHICLE: Internal mechanics' logs showed Daniel's brake lines had been deliberately cut at a private garage owned by Owen Pierce's associate.

Clara buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, heartbroken sob. "Daniel knew..." she wept. "He told me the night before he died that he found something terrible at the office, but he was afraid to go to the police because he didn't know who he could trust!"

Sebastian walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee in front of Clara’s chair. He took her shaking hands into his broad, warm palms.

"He couldn't trust the police, Clara," Sebastian spoke, his voice an iron vow that echoed through the silent study. "Because Owen paid off the local precinct to rule his death an accident. But your husband tried to protect my company. And tonight, I protect his family."

Marcus Vance stepped into the room, holding a secure radio. "Boss, Owen Pierce just left his private office down the hall. He’s heading for the underground garage with two bags."

Sebastian slowly stood up, smoothing his dark suit jacket.

"Marcus," Sebastian ordered smoothly. "Seal the garage. It’s time Owen answered for Daniel Carter."
