Chapter 4 - The Truth on the ThresholdClaire stood squarely in the doorway, her posture tall, broad, and sovereign, her hazel eyes holding zero fear, but a weight of absolute, unbroken boundaries.

"You shouldn't be here, Gabriel," Claire spoke softly into the rainy night. "The boys are asleep."

Gabriel took a trembling breath, reaching a shaking hand into his jacket pocket, pulling out the worn leather folder Marcus had compiled, holding it out toward her through the open door.

"I know about Serena, Claire," Gabriel revealed, his deep baritone shaking with raw, uncontrollable emotion. "I know what her father did five years ago. I know she threatened you and my unborn children with the Genovese syndicate while I was sitting in my office being a blind, arrogant fool."

Claire froze. Her hand tightened against the doorframe.

Gabriel fell flat onto his knees right there on the wet brownstone welcome mat, in the freezing rain, before her feet.

The feared Don of New York—the man who ruled the waterfront and commanded hundreds of men—knelt flat in the mud, his broad shoulders collapsing forward, tears of pure, unadulterated remorse cutting clean tracks through the rain on his face.

"I was a monster, Claire," Gabriel sobbed, pressing his forehead against the cold stone threshold near her slippers. "I ruined our marriage because I let my greed and my work consume me. I let a snake threaten the woman I loved and the children she carried. I don't ask you to forgive me... I don't ask you to take me back... but please, for the love of God... let me protect my sons."

Claire looked down at the man groveling at her feet.

For five years, she had carried the bitter weight of believing Gabriel had traded her for a younger, more glamorous model because she wasn't enough for his world. Hearing the truth—knowing that he now understood the full extent of the sacrifice she had made to keep their children safe—released a five-year-old knot inside her chest.

She stepped back from the door, pulling it open fully.

"Get inside out of the rain, Gabriel," Claire said softly, her voice quiet, absolute, and steady. "Before you catch pneumonia."
