Chapter 2 - The Audit of BetrayalBy midnight, the heavy rain over Manhattan lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of Gabriel Cross’s private penthouse suite on Wall Street.

The gala was over, but the explosion inside Gabriel's world was just beginning.

Gabriel stood by the glass, a glass of scotch untouched in his hand, his coat thrown carelessly over a chair. Standing across the marble living room were his three most trusted men: his younger brother and chief lieutenant, Liam Cross; his personal intelligence director, Marcus Vance; and his long-time legal counsel, Arthur Sterling.

On the mahogany coffee table lay a thick, newly compiled intelligence folder stamped with red wax seals: SPECIAL SURVEILLANCE REPORT — CLAIRE ELIZABETH BENNETT.

"How did I not know, Marcus?" Gabriel demanded. His voice wasn't loud, but the terrifying rumble beneath it made the air in the room drop below freezing. "How did my intelligence network, which tracks federal wiretaps and rival syndicate shipments across three continents, miss the fact that my ex-wife was pregnant with triplets when she left my house?!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, his face pale and sweat-slicked. "Gabriel... when Claire signed the divorce papers five years ago, she explicitly cut all digital and financial ties. She didn't use her married name, she didn't touch your accounts, and she checked into a private, non-network clinic in rural Vermont under her maiden name."

"And who funded that clinic, Marcus?!" Gabriel bellowed, turning his storm-gray eyes onto his intelligence director. "Who paid for three newborn infants to be raised without my name on their birth certificates?!"

Marcus swallowed hard, glancing nervously toward legal counsel Arthur Sterling.

Arthur stepped forward, setting a secondary ledger flat onto the table.

"Gabriel," Arthur spoke quietly. "The medical bills in Vermont... and the current lease on Claire's apartment in Brooklyn... were underwritten by a private trust. A trust managed by The Vale Development Group."

Gabriel froze. His eyes narrowed into dark, murderous slits. "The Vale Group... Serena’s father?"

"Five years ago, three days after you served Claire with divorce papers," Arthur revealed, his baritone heavy with grave realization, "Serena Vale visited Claire privately at a hotel in White Plains. Our recovered hotel security logs show Serena handed Claire a signed affidavit from a corrupt medical examiner claiming that if Claire attempted to contact you or contest the divorce, her pregnancy would be flagged as a 'security liability' to your waterfront rivals, putting the unborn children directly in the crosshairs of the Genovese syndicate."

Gabriel’s glass shattered in his hand.

CRASH!

Heavy crystal fragments and amber scotch showered over the marble floorboards.

The terrifying truth washed over Gabriel like a wave of white-hot liquid iron.

Claire hadn't left him because she didn't love him. She hadn't kept his children secret out of bitterness or greed.

She had fled into poverty and obscurity, raising three boys alone in a small Brooklyn apartment, because Serena Vale and her corrupt family had threatened the lives of his unborn sons using the dark, violent nature of his own empire against her.

Gabriel turned slowly toward his brother, Liam, his dark eyes holding an absolute, apocalyptic resolve.

"Liam," Gabriel commanded softly.

"I'm here, Boss," Liam answered instantly.

"Freeze every asset, every account, and every commercial development permit registered under the Vale family," Gabriel ordered, every word cold as mountain ice. "Cancel Serena’s contract with the Cross Foundation. And bring her father, Julian Vale, to the docks by three in the morning."
