Chapter 7 - The Final Dynasty

Six months later, the spring sun melted the last stubborn patches of Chicago snow, casting a brilliant golden light across the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate.

The transformation inside the mansion was complete. The cold, sterile museum of wealth it once was now echoed with the sound of running footsteps, childish laughter, and the occasional shriek of joy as Leo and Chloe chased the estate’s new golden retriever across the terrace.

I stood by the second-story balcony in a flowing white linen dress, watching Luca kick a soccer ball around the lawn with Leo while Chloe sat on his shoulders, cheering wildly as her father pretended to stumble like an overgrown bear.

The underworld had tested us one last time after Dante Russo’s betrayal, but Luca had swept through the Chicago syndicates with a ruthless, surgical precision that permanently cemented the Moretti name as untouchable. Yet, true to his word, the moment the dust settled, he began systematically stepping back from active street operations, handing over daily control to trusted loyalists while pivoting the family's vast capital into legitimate global investments.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a warm chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti,” Luca murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the sensitive skin of my neck.

I leaned back against his solid chest, smiling as I reached up to stroke his cheek, noticing the slight dusting of silver at his temples that only made him look more distinguished. “I was just thinking about how ridiculous we were five years ago.”

Luca chuckled, a rich, deep sound that still sent pleasant shivers down my spine. “I was a arrogant, blind idiot. That’s not ridiculous; that’s a clinical diagnosis.”

“True,” I laughed softly, turning around in his embrace to wrap my arms around his neck. “Though I have to admit, your taste in restaurants has vastly improved.”

Luca’s expression softened, his dark eyes shining with a profound, unshakeable devotion as he pulled me flush against him. “I’ll never forgive myself for the time I missed with them, Nia. But I promise you, every single day from now on, this family is my only empire.”

Down on the lawn, Leo kicked the soccer ball straight through a makeshift goal made of two winter coats, shouting, “Dad, did you see that?! Goal!”

Luca smiled, raising a hand in proud acknowledgment, before looking back down at me with absolute reverence in his eyes.

We had survived the mafia wars, the crushing weight of false assumptions, and the bitter agony of a broken past. But looking out across the sunlit grass at the family we had fought so hard to reclaim, I knew the worst was finally behind us. The Moretti dynasty hadn't been built on fear, power, or hidden secrets—it had been built on second chances, forgiveness, and a love stubborn enough to defy the odds.
