Chapter 5 - The Chessboard Shifts

Leo descended the stairs slowly, clutching his stuffed dinosaur against his chest, eyeing Luca with deep suspicion.
“Are you the man from the restaurant?” Leo asked, his voice steady despite his sleepiness.
Luca swallowed hard, removing his suit jacket entirely to appear less threatening. “Yes, buddy. I am.”
“Why are you in our house?”
“Because,” Luca said softly, his voice trembling slightly, “I wanted to apologize to your mom. And I wanted to meet you properly.”
Leo looked up at me, seeking guidance. I walked over, scooped my son up into my arms, and buried my face in his messy hair, glaring over his shoulder at Luca. “Go back to your men, Luca. It’s late.”
He didn't argue. He slowly stood up, nodded once with a heavy, broken expression, and walked out the front door into the snowy night, leaving his armed guards stationed outside our gates.
That was just the beginning.
Over the next two weeks, Luca didn't try to force his way into our home, but he systematically dismantled every obstacle around it. He stationed a discreet, highly professional security detail—men who didn't look like thugs, but polite retired federal agents—around our property to ensure we were protected from the rising tide of underworld retaliation that always followed a Moretti divorce fallout.
Word had already leaked across Chicago’s criminal underworld that the untouchable Luca Moretti had fathered secret twins with his disgraced ex-wife. Rivals saw an opportunity; capos saw a vulnerability.
The storm broke on a cold Friday afternoon while I was picking up groceries downtown.
A black van cut off my SUV at a red light, and two armed men in ski masks wrenched my passenger door open before my security detail could maneuver their vehicle through the heavy traffic.
“Get out of the car, lady,” one of them growled, leveling a silenced pistol toward the back seat where Leo and Chloe were screaming in terror.
My heart stopped. I unclipped my seatbelt, ready to throw myself over my children, when the world exploded into violent motion.
From out of nowhere, an unmarked SUV rammed the side of the kidnapper’s van with a sickening crunch of metal. Side doors flew open, and Luca’s personal guards swarmed the vehicle like a pack of wolves. Within ten seconds, both kidnappers were face-down on the asphalt, their weapons kicked away, pinned under heavy tactical boots.
Another black car pulled up beside us, and the back door swung open.
Luca stepped out. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate tattoos wrapping around his forearms, and his face was twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
He didn't look at the men on the ground. He rushed straight to my door, wrenched it open, and unbuckled Leo and Chloe, pulling them both into his arms in a fierce, protective embrace.
“Daddy!” Chloe cried, burying her face in his shoulder.
Luca froze for a fraction of a second at the word, before his arms tightened around them as if he would rather die than let them go. He carried them out of the car and set them gently inside his own vehicle, instructing his head guard to take them back to the Lake Forest estate immediately.

Then, he turned his cold, dead-eyed gaze toward me.
“Get in my car, Nia,” he ordered, his voice dropping into the terrifying register of a mafia don preparing for war.
