Chapter 6 - Blood and Resolution

We sat in the bulletproof backseat of Luca’s Escalade as it sped toward his heavily fortified compound in Lake Forest. The silence between us was suffocating, thick with adrenaline and unsaid words.
“Who sent them?” I asked quietly, staring out the frost-covered window.
“Dante Russo,” Luca replied coldly, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. “One of my senior capos. He thought capturing my children would force me to step down and hand the syndicate over to him.”
“And what happened to him?”
“Dante won’t be breathing by sunset,” Luca answered without a hint of hesitation.
I turned to look at him. The brutality in his voice was chilling, yet for the first time in years, I didn't feel afraid of it. I realized then that Luca’s entire violent world existed for one purpose: to build walls strong enough to keep his family safe. He had been so busy building the fortress that he had accidentally locked me outside of it.
When we arrived at the estate, Leo and Chloe were already playing happily in the massive indoor playroom with a bewildered but kind-hearted nanny, completely unaware of how close they had come to disaster.
Luca led me into his private, oak-paneled study, locking the heavy double doors behind us.
“I’m moving you back into the main house tonight,” Luca said flatly, leaning back against his mahogany desk. “Permanently. The compound is being locked down under twenty-four-hour armed guard. No one gets in or out without my direct authorization.”
“You don't own me, Luca,” I retorted, stepping up to him. “You don't get to dictate my life just because your enemies found out about my kids.”
“It’s not about control, Nia!” he shouted suddenly, the composure finally shattering. He slammed his fist against the edge of the desk, startling me. “It’s about survival! My enemies are your enemies now simply because you share my bloodline. I can’t protect you from a distance anymore. I tried that for five years, and it almost got my children killed today!”
He reached out, his large hands gripping my shoulders, his dark eyes burning with a desperate, agonizing intensity.
“I was a fool,” Luca whispered, his voice cracking. “I threw away the only real thing I ever had because I was chasing ghosts and legacy. I spent five years living in a sterile, loveless cage of my own making. When I saw you in that restaurant, holding my children... I realized how close I came to losing everything that actually mattered in this world.”
Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast. “You hurt me, Luca. You made me feel like I was broken.”
“I know,” he breathed, pulling me against his chest so hard I could hear the frantic, heavy beat of his heart. “And I will spend the rest of my life making up for every single tear I caused you. I don't care about the empire. I don't care about the syndicates. If you tell me to walk away from it all right now, I’ll burn my own kingdom to the ground tomorrow, and we can run away to somewhere quiet where no one knows our names.”
May you like
I buried my face in his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of cedar, smoke, and expensive cologne that had haunted my memories for half a decade. The anger that had sustained me for so long finally dissolved, washed away by the overwhelming tide of a love that had never truly died.
“You don't have to burn your kingdom down, Luca,” I whispered against his shirt. “Just... let us rule it together.”
