Chapter 1 - The St. Catherine's PoisoningThe laughter echoing through the private family suite of St. Catherine’s Medical Center evaporated in a single, suffocating instant, replaced by a raw, blood-curdling scream from the maternity corridor that made every heart in the room skip a beat.

One second earlier, my entire world was wrapped in absolute perfection. Three tiny, healthy cries had just filled the delivery suite, signaling the arrival of my newborn triplets. For a fleeting, magnificent moment, I truly believed that nothing in this universe could ever touch us, harm us, or tear us apart.

Then, the heart monitors shrieked in unison.

Nurses flooded through the double doors with emergency resuscitation kits, their faces pale and panicked. Within minutes, my wife, Claire, was wheeled away down the antiseptic hallway toward the Intensive Care Unit, her face stark white against the hospital linens.

I stood frozen outside the ICU doors, still wearing the charcoal suit I had meticulously chosen for the happiest day of my life.

I was Mason Sloane, founder and CEO of Sloane Infrastructure Group—a multi-billionaire whose face routinely graced the covers of business magazines and financial journals across the globe. I controlled skyscraper projects, managed international supply chains, and commanded the respect of corporate titans. Yet, standing in that sterile hospital hallway, all my wealth, power, and influence felt utterly worthless. I was just a terrified husband watching the doctors fight for the life of the woman who had loved me before I had a single dime to my name.

Across the corridor, standing near the vending machines, Vanessa Vale lowered her smartphone, her fingers tightening around the device as she pressed her lips together into a thin, unnatural line. A fleeting, unreadable expression crossed her face before she quickly smoothed her features into a mask of polite concern.

Vanessa. The last person I expected to see lurking in the shadows during the most agonizing night of my life.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the ICU swung open, and Dr. Adrian Bennett stepped out into the hallway. His expression was a dark, heavy cloud that made my stomach drop into a bottomless abyss.

— Mr. Sloane, — Dr. Bennett murmured, stepping toward me.

I lunged forward, grabbing the doctor by the lapels of his white coat.

— Tell me she’s okay. Tell me my wife is going to make it.

Dr. Bennett hesitated. That single, agonizing pause terrified me more than any screaming monitor ever could.

— Your wife is alive, Mr. Sloane, — the doctor said carefully, his voice dropping to a somber whisper. — But her current condition was not caused by complications from the childbirth.

My heart stuttered violently against my ribs.

— What are you talking about?

He looked me straight in the eyes, unblinking.

— Blood panels show concentrated traces of a lethal neurotoxic substance in Claire’s bloodstream. She has been systematically poisoned.

The corridor around us seemed to vanish. The distant cries of newborn babies echoing from the nursery, the hum of the vending machines, the fluorescent lights overhead—everything faded into a deafening silence.

— My wife... was poisoned? — I choked out, the words tasting like bitter ash in my mouth.

Dr. Bennett nodded slowly.

— Yes. Someone administered a toxin to her within the last few hours.

The realization hit me like a physical blow. St. Catherine’s was a private, high-security facility. Only a handful of people had been granted access to Claire’s suite today—family members, trusted medical staff, and close associates.

The monster who tried to murder the mother of my children wasn't a faceless stranger lurking in the dark.

It was someone who had walked through that hospital door with a smile. Someone sitting close enough to touch her. And as I stared down the sterile hallway, a cold, ruthless fury ignited deep within my chest. They wanted to destroy my family? I was going to hunt them down and tear their entire world apart.
