Chapter 1 - The Apology with a SilencerThe glass of the front display shattered into a thousand glittering shards as two more high-caliber rounds punched through the air, embedding themselves deep into the mahogany counter where Sophia had stood thirty seconds earlier.

Underneath the overturned oak table, Nicolo Bandi lay flat on his back, his breath trapped in his chest from the weight of the woman pinning him down.

The scent of spilled, cold espresso mixed with the metallic sting of fresh blood and burning gunpowder.

Sophia didn't look at Nicolo. Her body was coiled like a steel spring, her dark eyes completely focused on the reflection of the doorway visible in a broken mirror shard lying six inches from his cheek.

She reached beneath her stained white apron, her fingers moving with smooth, fluid, military precision.

She didn't pull out a notepad or a tip tray.

Her fingers closed around the matte-black grip of a custom, subcompact Heckler & Koch VP9SK with an integrated titanium suppressor.

CLICK.

She racked the slide with one hand against her thigh, a sound so crisp, clean, and practiced that it made Nicolo’s heart freeze.

"You..." Nicolo choked out, his voice a hoarse, disbelieving rasp as he stared at the heavy tactical steel resting in the hands of the waitress he had spent six months mocking for dropped spoons. "Who the hell are you?"

"I told you to stay down, Mr. Bandi," Sophia spoke.

Her voice was no longer soft, hesitant, or apologetic. It was a cold, low, absolute baritone that held zero fear, carrying the weight of a sovereign operator who had survived a hundred battlefields.

Above them, boots crunched heavily over broken glass and shattered wood.

"Clear the floor!" a guttural voice barked in Ukrainian. "Check the Bandi boss! Make sure he’s dead before the secondary unit arrives!"

Sophia didn't hesitate.

She slid off Nicolo, using the overturned table for leverage, and rose onto one knee.

THWIP. THWIP.

Two suppressed rounds punched through the oak table with terrifying precision.

The first gunman—a broad-shouldered tactical mercenary carrying an short-barreled assault rifle—stiffened as a high-velocity 9mm round punched cleanly through the center of his forehead. He collapsed backward into the display case before his weapon even hit the floorboards.

The second gunman turned his rifle toward the table.

THWIP.

Sophia’s second round caught him directly under the left collarbone, severing his brachial artery. He dropped to his knees, clutching his neck, his rifle sliding across the checkered tile straight to Nicolo’s feet.

"You've got three seconds to grab that rifle and crawl to the kitchen, Nicolo," Sophia commanded flatly without turning her head.

Nicolo stared at her, his mind spinning into a whirlwind of shock, awe, and wild adrenaline. "Sophia... what is this?!"

Sophia ejected her empty magazine, slapping a fresh sixteen-round box into the well with a sharp, heavy snap.

"My name isn't Sophia," she revealed, her dark eyes burning with an unshakeable, lethal steel as she looked down at him. "My name is Commander Maya Vance. And those men just made the biggest mistake of their lives."
