Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Down in the subterranean vault of the Duarte estate, far beneath the manicured lawns and glittering chandeliers of the main mansion, the air was cool, smelling faintly of old paper, leather, and damp concrete.

Patricia sat handcuffed to a heavy steel chair bolted directly into the reinforced floor of the auxiliary security holding room. The designer silk blouse was hopelessly stained, her hair falling in wild, tangled strands around her pale, sweating face.

The heavy iron door creaked open.

Footsteps echoed off the concrete walls. Patricia didn't look up, assuming it was Marco coming back with more interrogation forms or federal agents ready to process her transfer.

“I want my phone,” Patricia hissed, her voice hoarse from screaming. “I want my legal counsel present immediately. You cannot hold me down here in the dark like an animal! Emiliano will pay for this—do you hear me? He thinks he’s untouchable, but Vance & Associates own half the federal judges in this state!”

“Vance & Associates don't own as much as they think they do, Miss Patricia,” a calm, steady voice echoed from the shadows near the doorway.

Patricia froze. She raised her head, her eyes narrowing as she tried to pierce the gloom of the dimly lit room.

Out of the shadows stepped Rosa.

She wasn't wearing her usual gray housekeeper’s uniform. Instead, she wore a sharp, charcoal-gray blazer over a black turtleneck, her posture completely transformed from the deferential, quiet maid into something lean, dangerous, and utterly commanding. Behind her stood Marco, holding a thick leather-bound dossier under his arm.

Patricia stared at her, her jaw dropping open in utter disbelief. “You… you’re just the maid. What are you doing down here? Did Emiliano send you to gloat?”

Rosa stopped two paces away from the steel chair, looking down at Patricia with a gaze so cold and detached that Patricia instinctively shivered.

“The maid,” Rosa repeated softly, a faint, humorless smile touching her lips. “It’s a very useful disguise, Patricia. People tend to ignore the person cleaning the floorboards. They say things in front of them they’d never dream of uttering in a boardroom. They drop documents on desks, leave passwords scribbled on sticky notes, and assume the woman holding the feather duster is too illiterate to understand corporate finance.”

Patricia’s breath hitched in her throat. “What… what are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that your little corporate espionage operation didn't fail because Emiliano got lucky,” Rosa said, stepping closer, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. “It failed because I cleared the path for you to hang yourself.”

Marco stepped forward, tossing the thick leather dossier onto the small metal table in front of Patricia. The heavy cover fell open, revealing page after page of encrypted banking records, encrypted text logs between Patricia and Julian Vance, and signed operational manifests proving that Patricia had been leaking Northstar Technologies' source code to Vance & Associates for over fourteen months.

“You… you set me up,” Patricia whispered, horror dawning in her eyes as the true scale of the trap finally became clear. “You weren't just cleaning the house… you were gathering the evidence.”

“Mr. Duarte built this empire with ruthless ambition,” Rosa said quietly, turning her back and walking slowly toward the heavy iron door. “He forgot how to protect the people inside it. My job wasn't to clean up his messes, Patricia. My job was to make sure that when the wolf finally tried to wear sheep’s clothing in this house, it didn't survive the winter.”

She paused at the doorway, looking back over her shoulder one last time.

“Enjoy your stay in federal custody,” Rosa said smoothly. “The accommodations are much colder than the master suite upstairs, but I hear the company is much more suited to your true character.”

With a heavy, final thud, the iron door swung shut, the automatic deadbolts sliding into place with a sharp, metallic ring that echoed down the empty corridor, leaving Patricia alone in the dark with the wreckage of her own ambitions.
