Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The green indicator light on the multi-channel monitor flickered in the absolute darkness of the sub-basement security room, casting a sickly emerald glow across Emiliano Duarte’s hardened features. His knuckles were pressed so tightly against the scarred wood of the control desk that his skin had turned a translucent, bloodless white. On the primary high-definition screen directly in front of him, the playback loop of the living room had just shifted from morning stillness to living, breathing reality.
For thirty-four minutes, he had sat in this concrete vault with Marco, his head of security, watching the house he had built with his own hands reveal its dark, pulsing underbelly.
The image of Patricia standing over his daughters, her aristocratic face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated venom, burned behind his retinas. For months, she had played the part of the devoted future stepmother—soft-spoken, patient, elegant, and endlessly reassuring him that his absence as a traveling titan of industry was adequately filled by her presence. She had wrapped herself around his life like expensive silk, smoothing out the rough edges of his grief after his wife’s death, whispering sweet, poisonous rationalizations into his ear late at night.
“You trust that maid too much,” she had told him the night before, her manicured fingers tracing patterns across his chest as he lay half-asleep. “She’s stealing from you. And worse… she’s manipulating your daughters. They’re turning away from us, Emiliano. They love her more than they love you.”
It was a masterclass in psychological manipulation. By planting the seeds of doubt, Patricia had blinded him to the truth. She had utilized his deepest, most secret insecurity—the gnawing guilt of a father who traded time with his children for corporate supremacy—and weaponized it against the only person in the mansion who had genuinely sought to protect them.
On the screen, Rosa stood motionless between Patricia and the two terrified girls, her posture deferential yet utterly unyielding. She was a woman who spoke in whispers, whose hands were permanently roughened by cleaning chemicals and hard labor, yet in that moment, she looked like an iron fortress standing against a tidal wave.
“Rewind thirty seconds, Marco,” Emiliano ordered, his voice sounding like gravel grinding under a heavy boot.
Marco didn't speak. His fingers flew across the keyboard, bringing the footage back to the exact second Patricia had snatched the stuffed rabbit from Martina’s hands. Emiliano watched it again, frame by frame, studying the micro-expressions on his daughters' faces. He saw the way Daniela instinctively shifted her body to shield her younger sister. He saw the exact millisecond Martina’s lower lip began to tremble—not out of a sudden fit of childhood upset, but from the conditioned reflex of abuse.
“She’s been doing this for months,” Emiliano whispered, the realization tasting like copper and ash in his dry mouth. “Every time I packed my bags for Zurich, for Frankfurt, for Tokyo… this was what happened the second the taillights disappeared down the drive.”
“The house logs show a distinct pattern of elevated stress responses in the children during your extended trips, sir,” Marco said quietly, his eyes fixed on a secondary monitor displaying the hallway audio feeds. “We pulled the historical audio files from the nanny cams Patricia insisted on installing in the children’s study three months ago. We isolated recurring audio frequencies. Crying. Shouting. Things that were scrubbed from the cloud storage logs using administrator-level override credentials.”
Emiliano’s head snapped toward his head of security. “Administrator credentials? Only two people in this estate have master access to the security routing protocol. Myself… and Patricia.”
“Correct,” Marco replied grimly. “She wasn't just managing the household staff, Mr. Duarte. She was systematically editing the surveillance data to ensure you only saw a sanitized, sterile version of domestic harmony whenever you checked the live feed from abroad.”
A cold, terrifying fury surged through Emiliano’s veins, replacing the shock with a razor-sharp, calculating clarity. For years, men in the international markets had called him a shark, a predator who smelled weakness from a mile away and destroyed his corporate rivals without a second thought. Yet in his own home, under his own roof, he had been played like a fool by a woman whose ambitions extended far beyond marrying into the Duarte fortune.
“She wants the estate,” Emiliano said, his voice dropping into a dark, hypnotic register. “She wants control of the family trust, and to get it, she needs my daughters isolated, broken, and entirely dependent on her approval. And to do that, she had to get rid of the one person who saw through her act.”
On the central screen, Patricia had turned her back on Rosa, her posture snapping instantly back into that of the graceful, refined socialite as she addressed the girls with a sickeningly sweet voice that didn't reach her cold, dead eyes.
“Come along, girls,” Patricia trilled, her voice carrying clearly through the high-gain directional microphones. “Let’s go to the drawing room. We have a very special visitor arriving this afternoon, and you are going to look your absolute best, aren't you?”
Emiliano stared at the monitor, his fingers tightening into iron fists. “Who is visiting at this hour? My schedule for today is completely cleared.”
“Checking external gate logs now,” Marco muttered, tapping a secondary tablet. A live feed from the perimeter security cameras popped up on the left-hand display. A sleek, matte-black town car was idling just outside the main security gates, waiting for the automated signal to enter the private drive.
The license plate was registered to a shell corporation tied directly to Vance & Associates—Patricia’s former employers, and a corporate entity Emiliano was currently locked in a bitter, multi-million-dollar buyout battle with.
The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying velocity. Patricia wasn't just a cruel stepmother; she was an industrial spy, planted in his life to infiltrate his inner circle, extract proprietary merger data from his private home office, and systematically dismantle his family so he would be too emotionally compromised to fight back during the upcoming shareholder vote.
“Marco,” Emiliano commanded softly, standing up from the control desk and adjusting the cuffs of his shirt with deadly precision. “Lock down every perimeter door. Activate electronic signal jamming across the entire east wing so no external calls can leave the property. And bring me my ledger from the floor safe upstairs.”
“And Miss Patricia?” Marco asked, a faint, humorless smirk touching the corner of his mouth.

Emiliano stared at the screen, watching Rosa quietly pick up Martina’s dropped rabbit, dusting it off with infinite care before handing it back to the little girl with a reassuring smile.
“Let her play her game,” Emiliano whispered, his eyes narrowing into cold, gray steel. “The trap is set. Now, let’s see how she handles a houseguest she isn't expecting.”
