Chapter 6 - A New Dawn at Stone RidgeTwo weeks had passed since the afternoon Ethan was hauled away by federal marshals and state troopers.

The legal fallout of his arrest was swift and absolute. Between federal wire fraud charges, tax evasion, and the emergency restraining orders filed on my behalf, Ethan was remanded to a federal detention facility without bond, facing a mandatory prison sentence that would keep him behind bars for the next fifteen to twenty years.

More importantly, my divorce petition—filed under the direct supervision of Adrian’s top-tier legal team—was granted in record time, securing full, uncontested custody of Lily, alongside a comprehensive financial settlement that stripped Ethan of any remaining claims to my future.

Inside the sunlit kitchen of the Stone Ridge estate, Mrs. Higgins was humming a cheerful tune as she poured fresh coffee, while Lily sat happily at the island eating sliced strawberries and babbling away with a new plush teddy bear Adrian had surprised her with.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the manicured gardens where the morning mist was slowly burning off under the golden Texas sun.

My life had completely transformed. I was no longer the terrified, running mother hiding in the shadows of a broken marriage. For the first time since I was a young woman with dreams of my own, I had stability, safety, and a horizon full of possibilities.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

I turned around to see Adrian walking into the kitchen, dressed casually in a soft grey cashmere sweater and dark jeans. He looked rested, the deep weariness that had shadowed his eyes on our flight from Monterrey completely replaced by a vibrant, relaxed warmth.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” I smiled softly, accepting a cup of coffee from Mrs. Higgins with a grateful nod. “Fourteen days ago, I was sitting on a crowded airplane holding a crying baby, convinced my life was completely over.”

Adrian walked over, leaning his hip against the counter beside me. “And now?”

“Now... I feel like I’m finally waking up from a very long nightmare,” I confessed, looking up at him. “Adrian, I don't even know how to begin to thank you. You gave us a home, security, legal protection, and peace of mind. I can't stay here forever as your permanent guest. I need to figure out my next steps—find a job, get an apartment in the city...”

Before I could finish my sentence, Adrian reached out and gently caught my hand.

His touch sent a warm, electric shiver straight up my arm.

“Who said anything about you leaving, Elena?” he asked, his voice low and rich with sincerity.

I blinked in surprise. “Adrian, I can't impose on you indefinitely. You’ve already saved my life.”

“You aren't imposing,” he said earnestly, stepping closer until I could feel the gentle heat radiating from him. “Over the last two weeks, having you and Lily in this house... filling these empty halls with laughter, life, and warmth... I didn't realize how profoundly lonely I had been until you walked through my front doors.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

Adrian didn't open it immediately. Instead, he looked deeply into my eyes, his expression vulnerable and completely devoid of the billionaire armor he usually wore for the world.

“I’m not asking you to rush into anything, Elena. I know what you’ve survived, and I know you need time to heal,” Adrian said softly. “But I want you to know that my home, my heart, and my future are yours—if you’re willing to take a chance on a very tired traveler who sat next to you on a flight to Houston.”

He slowly opened the box.

Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed diamond ring featuring a delicate, timeless platinum band set with a brilliant, clear center stone—simple, elegant, and breathtaking.

Tears welled up in my eyes, not of fear or sorrow this time, but of pure, overwhelming joy.

“You’re crazy, Adrian Prescott,” I whispered, a watery laugh escaping my lips.

May you like

“Maybe so,” he smiled, sliding the ring onto my finger. “So, what do you say? Will you stay?”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, tender kiss that tasted like the promise of everything good and true in the world.
