Chapter 4 - The Lion at the GateAdrian’s demeanor shifted from gentle host to ruthless corporate titan in a single heartbeat.

“Explain,” Adrian ordered sharply, stepping away from the railing.

“It’s Ethan Walker,” Marcus reported, tapping the screen to bring up live security camera feeds from the estate’s main entrance. “He managed to track the rental vehicle’s GPS trail—or more likely, bribed a local traffic cop who flagged the SUV leaving the executive terminal convoy. He’s parked right outside the security gates, screaming at the automated intercom, demanding that we release his wife and child.”

I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth as cold terror spiked through my veins. “He found us... How did he find us so fast? This estate is hidden!”

“He didn't find the estate by accident, ma'am,” Marcus said grimly. “He followed one of our decoy surveillance vehicles that split off toward Pasadena, realized it was a trap, and doubled back by tailing a delivery truck through the automated gates before they fully closed.”

Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He handed his satellite phone to Marcus, squared his shoulders, and looked down at me.

“Stay inside the west wing with Lily and Mrs. Higgins,” Adrian instructed, his voice an absolute command that brooks no argument. “Lock the reinforced security doors. Do not open them for anyone except me or Marcus.”

“Adrian, no!” I grabbed his arm, my voice trembling with fear. “Ethan is violent! He has connections, he’s unpredictable—if you go out there and confront him, he could—he could sue you, or worse, make a public scandal that hurts your company!”

Adrian covered my hand with his, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles. A slow, terrifyingly confident smile crept across his lips.

“Elena,” he whispered softly, “let me show you why men like Ethan Walker only look powerful until they walk into the real world.”

He turned and strode briskly toward the grand foyer, motioning for Marcus and two tactical operatives to fall in behind him.

I couldn't just stay in the room. Ignoring his instructions, I hurried down the carpeted hallway and slipped into the private second-floor observation gallery that overlooked the sprawling front courtyard and security gate below.

Through the tinted, bulletproof glass, I watched the scene unfold.

A sleek black Mercedes SUV was parked sideways right across the stone driveway, blocking the grand entrance. Its driver-side door was swung wide open.

Standing beside it was Ethan.

Even from a distance, I recognized his arrogant posture, his expensive tailored suit jacket wrinkled from travel, and his face red with alcoholic fury. He was screaming wildly at the intercom box, aggressively kicking the heavy iron bars of the security gate while two of his hired local thugs stood awkwardly behind him, looking increasingly uncomfortable as four of Adrian’s private security guards stood in a disciplined, silent semicircle around them, holding non-lethal tactical restraints.

The heavy oak front doors of the estate opened.

Adrian stepped out into the bright afternoon sun. He didn't rush. He didn't yell. He simply buttoned his navy blue sport coat with casual elegance, walking down the stone steps with the absolute, crushing authority of a monarch surveying his domain.

Ethan stopped screaming. He spun around, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the man approaching him.

“Who the hell are you?!” Ethan bellowed, pointing a shaking, accusatory finger at Adrian. “Where is my wife?! Where is my daughter?! I know she’s in there! If you don't open these gates right now, I’ll call every federal judge and media outlet in Texas and have your little fortress raided by morning!”

Adrian stopped ten feet away from him, keeping his hands casually slipped into his trouser pockets.

“You must be Ethan Walker,” Adrian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard.

“That’s right! And you’re trespassing, harboring a fugitive, and abducting a minor!” Ethan snarled, stepping forward aggressively. “I am giving you exactly five seconds to send my wife out here, or I will ruin you!”

Adrian let out a quiet, mocking chuckle.

“Ruined?” Adrian tilted his head, his eyes flashing with lethal amusement. “Ethan, do you actually know whose property you are currently trespassing on?”

Ethan scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. “Some bloated tech bro with a fancy house! I don't care who you are! My family holds massive real estate contracts in Monterrey and cross-border manufacturing ties that—!”

Adrian raised a single hand, cutting him off mid-sentence.

At that exact moment, Marcus stepped forward and handed Adrian a sleek titanium tablet displaying a live financial overview.

“Let me educate you on a few facts, Ethan,” Adrian said, stepping closer with chilling composure. “Over the last forty-eight hours, my corporate legal team has conducted a comprehensive audit of Walker Enterprises and your personal offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

Ethan’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. “What... what are you talking about?”

“We discovered systemic wire fraud, tax evasion, and illegal international asset concealment totaling over twelve million dollars,” Adrian continued smoothly, reading directly from the screen. “More importantly, three minutes ago, my chief counsel filed an emergency motion for a federal receivership freezing every single corporate asset you own. Your business accounts are currently set to zero. Your international shipping licenses have been revoked by the Department of Commerce. And your corporate partners in Monterrey have already been notified that you are under active federal investigation.”

Ethan’s face drained of all color. He staggered backward, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“That... that’s impossible!” Ethan shrieked, panic cracking his voice. “You can’t do that! Who the hell are you?!”

Adrian locked his eyes onto Ethan’s, his voice dropping an octave into an icy, terrifying whisper.

“My name is Adrian Prescott. And your wife is never, ever going back to you.”
