Chapter 2 - Shadows on the TarmacThe private jet bridge led us away from the claustrophobic crush of the main terminal and into a sleek, climate-controlled corridor where four men in immaculate black suits stood at attention. Their posture was rigid, their eyes constantly scanning every angle with the practiced precision of former special operations operatives.

As Adrian stepped out of the tunnel with Lily cradled gently in my arms, the lead security officer—a broad-shouldered man with a scar across his left jaw named Marcus—stepped forward and snapped a crisp, silent nod.

“Sir. Everything is secured on the perimeter,” Marcus reported, his voice low and gravelly. Then his gaze flicked over to me and Lily, registering our worn clothes, the battered stroller, and the tension radiating from my posture. Without missing a beat, Marcus’s professional demeanor shifted into one of absolute protection. “And we have eyes on the secondary target.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Give me the brief, Marcus.”

“Fifteen minutes prior to touchdown, a local private security asset flagged an aggressive individual attempting to bribe customs and baggage agents at Terminal C, demanding access to the incoming passenger manifest for your flight,” Marcus explained, pulling a ruggedized tablet from his jacket. “Facial recognition and local traffic cameras confirmed it was Ethan Walker. He arrived in Houston on a private corporate charter three hours behind your departure from Monterrey. He currently has two local fixers with him.”

A cold fury settled deep in Adrian’s chest. He turned to me, his expression softening into profound gentleness. “Elena, listen to me. You and Lily are coming with me. My security detail will transport you to a secure, private residence where Ethan will never, in a million years, be able to touch you.”

“I can't,” I protested, shaking my head as hot tears finally spilled over my eyelashes. “Adrian, you’ve already done too much. I can't drag you and your empire into my personal mess. Ethan is ruthless; his family has deep political connections in Mexico, and he’ll—he’ll use every dirty trick in the book.”

Adrian stepped closer, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it impossible to look away.

“Elena, look around you,” he said softly, gesturing to the four armed operatives standing guard in the corridor. “Do you honestly think a two-bit corporate predator like Ethan Walker poses any threat to me? Let him try to find us. Let him try to play his games. But he will never lay a hand on you or your daughter again. That is not a request.”

Marcus signaled toward a fleet of three bulletproof black SUVs waiting on the tarmac just below a private elevator.

As we descended into the subterranean parking garage beneath the executive terminal, my phone—which I had left powered off at the bottom of my bag—suddenly vibrated violently.

I jumped, dropping my keys against the concrete floor.

Adrian knelt down, picked up the keys, and handed them back to me. His eyes flicked to the glowing screen of the phone, which was continuously flashing text notifications and missed call alerts.

Ethan: Where the hell are you? You think you can run with my child? Answer your phone right now, Elena, or I will ruin every living soul you’ve ever cared about!

My hands shook so hard I could barely swipe the screen to power it off permanently.

“He’s close, isn't he?” Adrian asked quietly.

“He’s furious,” I whispered. “When Ethan doesn't get his way, he destroys everything in his path. That’s why I had to leave. He... he wasn't just controlling me financially. The night before I packed our bags, he raised his hand against me while Lily cried in her crib. I knew if I stayed another day, one of us wouldn't make it out alive.”

A dark, dangerous shadow crossed Adrian’s face. The billionaire philanthropist, the tech visionary, the man the media portrayed as untouchable and aloof, vanished in an instant. In his place stood a man driven by an absolute, unyielding protective fury.

“Get in the vehicle, Elena,” Adrian said, opening the door of the armored SUV. “Let’s go home.”
