Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's TableThe bulletproof glass of the Mercedes muffled the frantic shouting of Damian’s guards, turning their desperate curses into dull thuds against the exterior. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, the air smelled faintly of expensive leather, cedar, and dark espresso.

Elena sat huddled in the corner of the plush leather seat, shivering so violently her teeth chattered. Her wedding dress was caked in mud and soaked through, clinging to her skin like a second wet skin. Yet, despite the freezing cold and the armed men outside ready to tear the vehicle apart, a fierce, defiant warmth burned in her chest.
In the front seat, Luca’s driver—a hulking mountain of a man named Marcus—slowly shifted the transmission into drive.
“Boss?” Marcus asked, his hand resting casually near the glove compartment where a submachine gun was undoubtedly stored, his eyes flicking to the side mirror as Damian’s chief enforcer slammed his palm against the window.
Luca Moretti didn't even flinch. He slowly tapped the ash of his cigar into a silver receptacle, his slate-gray eyes fixed entirely on Elena.
“Drive,” Luca commanded softly.
Marcus stepped hard on the accelerator. The high-torque engine roared, and the heavy sedan surged forward, easily brushing past the men who tried to block the path, sending one of Damian’s guards splashing backward into a muddy puddle. Within seconds, they were accelerating down the rain-slicked boulevard, leaving St. Jude’s Chapel and Damian Vale far behind in the rearview mirror.
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders sagging as the immediate danger receded.
“You have a lot of nerve, Elena Vance,” Luca broke the silence, his voice smooth and measured. He reached across the center console and pushed a heated button on the dashboard, directing a stream of warm air toward the back seat. “Interrupting a holy union, tracking mud all over my custom lambskin interior, and asking me to wage war against the most connected syndicate boss in the city before you’ve even caught your breath.”
Elena pulled her knees up to her chest, wincing as she looked down at the raw, bleeding cuts across the soles of her bare feet.
“You hate Damian Vale more than you care about my shoes, Mr. Moretti,” she replied, her voice steadying as she raised her chin to meet his gaze.
Luca’s eyebrows arched in mild amusement. A slow, appreciative smirk touched the corner of his lips. He studied her for a long moment—taking in the defiance in her eyes, the tangled brown hair framing her pale face, and the remnants of the torn white dress.
“You’re Arthur’s daughter,” Luca noted, swirling the amber liquid in a crystal tumbler housed in the car's side bar. “The quiet one. The invisible one everyone thought was too timid to speak at charity galas.”
“My father traded me for seventeen million dollars,” Elena said bitterly, her voice dropping into an icy register. “My silence is no longer an option.”
Luca leaned back against the leather seat, resting his chin on his knuckles. “And what makes you think I have any interest in helping you? Destroying Damian Vale requires millions in capital, compromised political assets, and blood. What can a runaway bride in a ruined wedding dress possibly offer me in return?”
Elena didn't blink. She reached into the secret inner pocket of her underskirt—a pocket she had carefully sewn in three days prior while pretending to sew lace adjustments—and pulled out a slim, waterproof black flash drive.
She held it up between her fingers, letting the dashboard light catch the metallic casing.
“This,” Elena said quietly, “contains every forged invoice, every offshore tax shelter, and every illegal municipal bribe paid out by the Vance Foundation over the last eight years. More importantly, it contains the encrypted digital ledger proving that Damian Vale’s construction front companies have been laundering cartel money through city redevelopment projects—with your primary shipping terminals targeted as the next takeover site.”
Luca’s expression shifted instantly. The casual amusement vanished from his eyes, replaced by a razor-sharp, lethal focus. The temperature inside the car seemed to drop twenty degrees.
He reached out, taking the small flash drive from her fingers. He turned it over in his palm, weighing its invisible, explosive value.
“Where did you get this?” Luca asked, his voice suddenly hard as iron.
“My father thought I was too stupid to understand accounting,” Elena answered, a grim smile touching her lips. “He left his home office safe unlocked last month while he was out drinking. I copied everything. If Damian gets his hands on me, he gets the girl. But if you protect me, I give you the ammunition to tear Damian’s entire empire down to the foundation.”
Luca stared at her for a long, breathless moment. Then, a low, rumbling chuckle escaped his throat.
“Remind me never to cross you, Elena,” Luca murmured softly.
He tapped a button on the armrest console to connect with the front seat. “Marcus, change of plans. We aren't going to the downtown safehouse.”
May you like
“Where to, boss?” Marcus grunted from the wheel.
“The estate in Lake Forest,” Luca replied, his eyes never leaving Elena’s face. “It’s time we give our uninvited guest a dry change of clothes and a seat at the table.”
