Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the FoundationThree months later, the legal proceedings against Marcus Vance reached their definitive conclusion. Faced with overwhelming physical evidence, unassailable financial audits, and federal racketeering charges, Marcus’s defense team accepted a plea deal that stripped him of his remaining assets and handed him a mandatory fifteen-year federal prison sentence without the possibility of parole.

His father’s real estate holdings were liquidated by the courts, and the historic downtown building where the Harrington Gala had taken place was purchased by an independent development conglomerate—one that immediately offered me the lead architect position for a complete structural redesign.
The morning the contract arrived on my desk, the sun was streaming brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new design studio on the twentieth floor of Damiano’s tower. My mother was recovering well in a sunlit medical facility upstate, and my sister had returned to her university classes with a dedicated security detail that had now become more like friendly family bodyguards.
Sofia walked into my office carrying a thick manila folder and a bottle of celebratory champagne. "The final asset forfeiture documents have been signed," she announced with a triumphant grin. "Marcus’s personal accounts have been drained to pay restitution to his victims, including a substantial settlement awarded directly to you for professional damages."
"Keep the settlement," I said, signing the last page of the architectural contract with a steady, confident hand. "Use it to fund a legal aid clinic for survivors of domestic financial abuse."
Sofia blinked, surprised, and then broke into a wide, approving smile. "Done. Damiano is going to be very proud of you."
Speaking of Damiano, the door to my office swung open, revealing the man himself. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the powerful, quiet strength that had first caught my eye across a crowded ballroom.
"I heard shouting about champagne," Damiano said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a warmth that completely melted the cold, imposing aura he projected to the outside world.
"Elena just turned down a multi-million-dollar payout to fund a domestic abuse legal clinic," Sofia announced, raising her glass. "She’s officially becoming too dangerous for this city."
Damiano walked over to my desk, his gaze never leaving my face. He didn't say anything for a moment, simply reaching out to touch the silver pen in my hand, his fingers gently closing over mine.

"I told you the first night," Damiano said softly, a faint smile playing on his lips, "men like Marcus never stop unless someone makes them. But women like Elena? They don't just stop the monsters. They rebuild the city from the ground up."
Sofia gracefully backed out of the office, closing the glass door behind her and leaving us alone in the sunlit room.
