Chapter 2 - Blueprint for a TrapThe conference room on the top floor of Damiano’s downtown tower overlooked the glittering expanse of the city skyline, but inside, the atmosphere was surgical. Sofia had spent the last twelve hours compiling every financial irregularity, corporate shell company, and hidden architectural zoning violation associated with Marcus’s family real estate empire.

"If we drop the audio recording directly onto social media, it will be flagged as a deepfake," Sofia explained, tapping a stylus against a massive digital whiteboard. "Marcus’s PR team has already planted stories claiming you are suffering from a severe psychotic break brought on by substance abuse. We need independent, verifiable corruption to anchor your testimony."

"That’s where my job comes in," I said, stepping up to the whiteboard. For eight months, Marcus had forced me to ghost-write structural engineering reports and zone-compliance modifications for his firm’s luxury developments, keeping my name off the bylines while taking all the credit. "Marcus thinks I was just his frightened girlfriend. He forgot that I engineered the foundational integrity models for every single high-rise his firm built in the last three years."

Damiano sat at the head of the mahogany table, watching me with an intensity that made my pulse race. "You know where the bodies are buried, metaphorically speaking."

"Literally," I corrected, pulling up a digital schematic of the Harrington-Vance luxury tower—the very building where the gala had been held. "Marcus cut corners on the load-bearing steel reinforcements to pad his profit margins by fifteen percent. If an independent structural audit is triggered by a federal agency, the entire building fails safety inspections. His family's entire portfolio goes under overnight."

"That’s a nuclear option," Sofia warned, though a small, wicked smile played on her lips. "It will bring federal investigators down on half the city council, including Commander Vance."

"Good," Damiano said quietly, standing up and adjusting his cuffs. "Let’s start a fire they can't put out with hush money."

The plan was set into motion with military precision. While Matteo and his security team secured my mother’s hospital transfer to a private, heavily guarded medical facility out of state, Sofia arranged a confidential meeting with an investigative journalist from the city’s largest newspaper—a woman known for taking down corrupt developers.

I packed a single small bag, my hands steady for the first time in months. Damiano walked me down to the underground parking garage, his shoulder brushing mine in the private elevator.

"Are you afraid?" he asked as we reached his bulletproof town car.

"I was terrified yesterday," I replied, looking up into his dark, steady eyes. "Today, I'm just angry that I let him waste so much of my life."

He opened the car door for me, his hand lingering for a fraction of a second on the top of the frame. "Remember, Elena, once we light this match, there’s no turning back. Marcus will come out swinging with everything he has."

"Let him," I said, sliding into the leather seat. "I'm done running."
