Chapter 2 - The Trap Closes EarlyThe glowing green text on my laptop screen felt like a physical blow.

“The complication with the prenatal specialist in Boston cannot be ignored,” Charles Vane’s message to Dominic read. “If she gives birth in a Manhattan hospital, her independent OB-GYN will legally have to file the complete diagnostic charts. We cannot risk the court appointing an independent guardian ad litem who might uncover the trust stipulations. Induce early. We move the timeline up by four weeks.”

Dominic’s reply had come ten minutes later: “Make arrangements with Dr. Vance at St. Jude’s Memorial. Tell her the pre-eclampsia symptoms are worsening. She’ll administer the ‘preventative’ IV drip tomorrow morning during her routine check-up.”

I slammed the laptop lid shut, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

St. Jude’s Memorial was a private hospital heavily funded by Callahan Maritime. Dr. Vance—no relation to Dominic, but entirely dependent on his foundation grants—was scheduled to visit our penthouse tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. to administer a routine prenatal vitamin infusion.

Except it wasn't vitamins. It was a slow-acting cervical ripening agent combined with a paralytic stabilizer designed to induce premature labor under the guise of an emergency medical crisis, giving them total control over my hospitalization and immediate legal isolation.

They weren't just going to divorce me; they were going to harvest my child, institutionalize me under a fraudulent psychiatric hold, and wipe me off the family tree before the sun set tomorrow.

I stood up, resting a trembling hand on my protruding belly. "Don't worry, little one," I whispered into the quiet, dark nursery. "Mommy is not going down without a war."

I packed light. A single black leather duffel bag hidden at the back of my closet. Inside went my passport, my birth certificate, copies of our marriage certificate, cash I had stashed from my freelance translation accounts over the years, and the encrypted flash drive containing every shred of corporate fraud, asset concealment, and conspiracy I had just downloaded.

I checked my watch. 2:15 a.m.

Dominic’s study light was still on beneath the hallway door. I could hear the muffled, low murmur of his voice speaking in rapid Italian on a secure satellite phone to his legal team in Zurich.

I needed an ally. Someone outside the Callahan sphere of influence who possessed the teeth to bite back.

I pulled out a burner phone I had purchased weeks ago—an instinctual precaution triggered by a sudden coldness in Dominic’s behavior months prior—and dialed a twelve-digit encrypted number stored in my memory.

It rang three times before a groggy, sharp voice answered: "This better be a matter of national security, or you're paying for my espresso machine."

"Julian," I said, my voice razor-sharp and steady. "I need an extraction. And I need a federal prosecutor who isn't on Dominic Callahan's payroll."

Julian Sterling—my former law school classmate and now senior trial attorney for the Southern District of New York—went completely silent on the other end. The sleep vanished from his voice instantly.

"Clare?" Julian asked, his tone dropping into total professional focus. "Where are you? Is Dominic there?"

"He's down the hall," I whispered, walking silently toward the window overlooking Central Park. "Julian, they’re planning to medically induce me tomorrow morning under false pretenses, declare me insane, and steal my son. I have the digital paper trail sitting on a drive in my hand. But if I stay in this penthouse another six hours, I won't walk out alive."

A heavy, terrifying pause stretched across the line.

"Pack your bags," Julian said coldly. "Don't take your primary phone—leave it on the nightstand so the geolocator registers you inside the master suite. Take the service elevator down to the basement loading dock. My firm's private courier van will be parked behind the laundry pickup at exactly 3:45 a.m. Wear dark clothes."

"I'll be there," I whispered.

"Clare... once you step out that door, there’s no turning back," Julian warned. "Dominic Callahan will hunt you across state lines. He is connected to every major shipping syndicate and political donor on the East Coast."

May you like

I looked down at my swollen stomach, feeling my son's steady, powerful heartbeat against my palm. A cold, unyielding fire ignited deep within my soul.

"Let him hunt," I replied. "Because by the time he realizes I'm gone, I won't be running anymore. I'll be coming for his empire."
