Chapter 7 - Spring on the LakeThe spring thaw of 2027 arrived in Chicago with a brilliant, golden warmth that melted away the last remnants of the winter snow and turned the forty private acres of the DeLuca estate into an exploding canvas of blooming tulips, weeping willows, and emerald-green lawns stretching down toward the glistening waters of Lake Michigan.

The underworld had learned its lesson.

With Salvatore Moretti locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary and the remaining syndicate factions either bowing to Victor’s legitimate commercial supremacy or fleeing the state entirely, the Russo empire transitioned fully out of the shadows. The dock unions were clean. The shipping logistics firms were publicly traded. And the name DeLuca was no longer spoken in fearful whispers across dimly lit back rooms, but rather celebrated in financial boardrooms and civic charity galas.

Inside the mansion, the heavy iron doors and locked rooms no longer felt like a prison. They felt like a home.

On a bright Saturday afternoon in late May, the courtyard was filled not with armed guards and flashing police lights, but with laughter, clinking champagne glasses, and the joyful chatter of fifty close friends and family members.

Tommy—now sixteen, healthy, and sporting a varsity jacket from his new high school—was running the dessert table, laughing with Mrs. Gable, who had finally softened her stern demeanor enough to pinch his cheek and scold him for eating too many cream puffs.

And standing near the stone balustrade overlooking Lake Michigan was Chloe.

She wore a breathtaking, floor-length gown of soft ivory silk that hugged her curves gracefully, her dark hair woven with fresh white daisies, her smile radiant and completely unburdened.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind. A familiar, clean scent of cedarwood and dark espresso filled her senses.

"You look beautiful," Victor murmured against her ear, his lips brushing the sensitive skin of her neck.

Chloe leaned back against his chest, resting her hands over his arms. He wore a tailored navy suit with an unbuttoned collar, looking relaxed, happy, and entirely at peace.

"You said that an hour ago," Chloe teased, turning around in his arms to face him.

"I plan on repeating it every hour for the next fifty years," Victor replied smoothly, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, clicking it open to reveal a stunning diamond ring that caught the spring sunlight.

Chloe gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Victor... we talked about this. We agreed—"

"We agreed that you wanted a real wedding, with family, sunlight, and zero syndicate interference," Victor interrupted softly, his silver-gray eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion. "This isn't a business merger, Chloe. And it certainly isn't a logistical calculation."

He dropped smoothly onto one knee right there on the stone terrace, in plain sight of everyone, completely indifferent to what the world might think.

"You walked into my life when I was locked behind ten years of ice," Victor said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet terrace as the guests slowly turned to watch. "You fell asleep in my bed, stole my peace of mind, and became the only person I could never, ever send away. Marry me, Chloe. Let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that you never have to be afraid again."

Tears spilled over Chloe’s eyelashes, but she was laughing.

"Yes," she whispered, pulling him up by his lapels and crashing her lips against his in a deep, fierce, and utterly joyful kiss.

The applause erupted around them—Mrs. Gable clapping with dignified restraint, Tommy cheering at the top of his lungs, and the warm spring wind carrying their laughter out across the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

The fortress had found its queen. And the monster had finally found his heart.
