Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over Oak ParkThe check cleared by Friday morning.

By Friday afternoon, Chloe had driven her sputtering, ten-year-old Honda Civic to St. Jude's Memorial Hospital, paid the billing department in full, and watched the clinical administrator sign the release forms clearing Tommy’s upcoming dialysis treatments.

When she told her brother, Tommy had stared at her with wide, disbelieving eyes from his hospital bed, clutching a comic book in his thin fingers.

"You... you paid it off?" Tommy asked, his voice shaking. "Chloe, how? Did you rob a bank?"

"I got a very generous bonus from my employer," Chloe lied smoothly, smoothing down the blankets over his legs while blinking back tears of profound relief. "And no, I didn't rob a bank. My boss is just... eccentric."

"Eccentric like a billionaire philanthropist, or eccentric like a movie mobster?" Tommy grinned weakly.

"Eccentric like you should eat your hospital pudding and stop asking questions," Chloe laughed, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

But the relief was short-lived.

By Saturday evening, the illusion of safety shattered into a million pieces.

Chloe was working late in the main kitchen of the DeLuca estate, helping Mrs. Gable prep for a private dinner party Victor was hosting, when the security intercom on the kitchen wall buzzed sharply.

Marcus picked up the receiver, listened for three seconds, and his face turned instantly grim. He pressed the mute button and looked directly at Mrs. Gable.

"We have an uninvited guest at the south gate," Marcus said, his voice low and dangerous. "Drunk, aggressive, and screaming that he's looking for Chloe Bennett."

Chloe dropped a paring knife onto the stainless-steel prep table. The clatter echoed loudly in the quiet kitchen.

"Who?" Mrs. Gable asked, frowning severely. "None of Miss Bennett's family are supposed to know where she works."

"It's not her family," Marcus replied, his eyes locked on Chloe. "It's Marcus Vance. Julian Vance's cousin. The guy who runs the security contracting firm downtown. He's claiming Chloe stole sensitive corporate documents from Julian's office last week."

Chloe’s heart slammed against her ribs. The air in the kitchen turned instantly frigid.

"That's a lie!" Chloe gasped, stepping forward. "I never stepped foot in Julian Vance's office! I don't even know where it is!"

"I know it's a lie," Marcus said darkly. "Julian is retaliating because Victor humiliated him in the study on Thursday. They're trying to use you to get to the boss."

Before Mrs. Gable could issue another command, the heavy oak doors of the kitchen swung open, and Victor Russo walked in.

He had his suit jacket off, his white sleeves rolled up, and his expression was carved from absolute, unadulterated ice. The aura of danger radiating off him filled the entire room, making the seasoned cooks instinctively step back into the shadows.

"Marcus," Victor said, his voice dangerously quiet. "Is he at the gate?"

"Yes, Mr. Russo. He's making a scene. He brought two local reporters with him from the Chicago Tribune."

Victor’s eyes snapped toward Chloe. She stood frozen by the prep table, her face pale, trembling violently as the reality of what was happening crashed down around her. Julian Vance wasn't just trying to smear her; he was trying to create a public scandal that would link Victor to corporate espionage and blackmail, destroying the legitimacy Victor had spent a decade building.

"Mr. Russo, I swear to God I didn't steal anything," Chloe whispered, hot tears finally spilling over her lashes. "You have to believe me. I didn't even know who Julian Vance was until he walked into your study."

Victor didn't answer her immediately. He walked across the kitchen floor, his long strides eating up the distance until he stood right in front of her. He reached out, his large hands gripping her shoulders firmly, anchoring her in place.

"Look at me, Chloe," he commanded softly.

She looked up, her dark eyes swimming with terror.

"Do you think for one second that I care about Julian Vance, his reporters, or his pathetic little games?" Victor asked, his voice steady, powerful, and absolute. "Do you think I built this empire by letting jackals walk onto my property and harass the people under my roof?"

May you like

Chloe shook her head slowly.

"Good," Victor said. He turned to Marcus. "Bring Vance through the gates. Let him bring his reporters. Give them a front-row seat to the rest of their miserable careers ending."
