Chapter 6 - The Shadows ReturnPeace in the underworld, however, was always a fragile commodity.

It was mid-January when the ghosts of Victor’s past decided to test the new foundation he had built.

It happened on a cold, moonless Tuesday night. Victor had flown to New York for a forty-eight-hour summit with shipping regulators, leaving Marcus in charge of estate security. Chloe was in the study, reviewing audit reports with Tommy, who was doing his homework at the mahogany table, when the main security alarms suddenly shrieked through the house.

Not the gentle chime of a door sensor.

The deafening, ear-piercing klaxon of a perimeter breach.

"Chloe, what's that?" Tommy asked, standing up quickly, his face draining of color.

"Stay right here," Chloe commanded, her voice dropping into the cold, authoritative tone she had unconsciously learned from Victor. She ran to the hallway console, pulling up the security cameras.

On the monitors, the north gate had been blown off its hinges. Three black SUVs were barreling up the private drive, their high beams cutting blinding paths through the snow. Men in tactical gear—armed with submachine guns—poured out of the vehicles, overwhelming the outer guard posts before Marcus’s men could even raise their rifles.

It wasn't Julian Vance. Julian was rotting in a federal cell.

This was Salvatore Moretti—the ruthless, aging patriarch of the New York syndicate, who viewed Victor’s recent push for legitimate corporate reform as a direct threat to their illicit shipping cartels.

"Tommy, listen to me," Chloe said, grabbing her brother by the shoulders and pulling him toward the hidden panic room built into the back of the walk-in library. "You’re going to get inside this vault, lock the heavy steel door from the inside, and do not open it for anyone. Not even me, unless I give the passcode Bellamy."

"Chloe, what about you?" Tommy panicked, his eyes wide with terror. "We have to call Victor!"

"Victor’s plane is in the air. He’s out of communication range," Chloe said fiercely, shoving him inside the vault and punching the heavy digital lock. "I'm going to lock down the master control system. Go!"

The heavy steel door slammed shut, sealing with a thick hydraulic hiss.

Seconds later, heavy boots echoed down the mahogany hallway. Glass shattered in the foyer. Marcus’s voice shouted a warning, followed immediately by the dull, terrifying thud of a silenced gunshot.

Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach. She grabbed a heavy cast-iron fireplace poker from the hearth, her hands trembling violently, and backed into the shadows of the study as the heavy double doors were kicked wide open.

A tall, silver-haired man in an expensive wool trench coat stepped into the room, holding a 9mm pistol loosely in his right hand. Salvatore Moretti smiled, his eyes cold and dead like a shark's.

"Well, well," Moretti purred, looking around the opulent study. "So this is where the great Victor Russo hides his favorite little pet."

Chloe tightened her grip on the iron poker, stepping in front of the hidden vault door. "You're trespassing on private property, Moretti. Victor will hunt you down to the ends of the earth."

Moretti laughed, a dry, grating sound. "Victor is flying over Pennsylvania right now, out of reach. By the time he lands tomorrow morning, his estate will be a smoking ruin, and his precious little housekeeper will be sleeping with the fishes in Lake Michigan. Tie her up," Moretti ordered, nodding to two armed thugs behind him.

The thugs lunged forward before Chloe could swing the poker. One of them caught her wrist, twisting her arm behind her back with brutal force, ripping the iron bar from her hand and slamming her face-first against the edge of the mahogany desk.

A white-hot flash of pain shot through her cheek. Taste of copper filled her mouth.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Chloe choked out, her face pressed against the wood, her eyes fixed on the panic room keypad.

Moretti stepped closer, raising his pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against the side of her head. "Any last words for your boss, sweetheart?"

Suddenly, the overhead lights in the mansion flickered violently.

The loud, rhythmic thumping of heavy helicopter rotor blades began to shake the reinforced glass windows of the study. Not the sound of an approaching enemy, but the deafening, thunderous downdraft of a military-grade twin-engine chopper landing directly on the front lawn.

Moretti frowned, lowering his gun slightly. "What the hell is that?"

The heavy oak doors of the study didn't just open. They exploded inward in a shower of splinters and iron bolts.

Standing in the smoking wreckage of the doorway was Victor Russo.

He wasn't wearing his cashmere sweater anymore. He wore a dark tactical vest over a black tactical shirt, his face covered in dark smoke smudges, his eyes burning with an incandescent, terrifying rage that made Salvatore Moretti take two instinctive steps backward.

"You stepped foot in my house, Salvatore," Victor whispered, his voice cutting through the rotor wash like a guillotine blade.

Moretti raised his pistol toward Victor, but before his finger could even brush the trigger, a red laser dot appeared dead center on Moretti’s forehead, followed instantly by Marcus stepping out from the shadows with a sniper rifle leveled at Moretti’s chest.

"Drop it," Victor commanded.

Moretti dropped the gun, the metal clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.

Within three seconds, Victor crossed the room with the terrifying speed of a striking predator. He grabbed Moretti by the collar of his expensive trench coat, slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf with enough force to shatter the glass panels, and pressed the muzzle of his own sidearm directly under Moretti’s chin.

"If you ever look at her again," Victor whispered, his voice dropping into a register so cold and deadly that even Moretti’s hardened thugs backed away in terror, "I won't just kill you. I will dismantle every asset, every route, and every bloodline bearing the Moretti name until your entire family is a footnote in a history book."

"Victor... wait," Moretti choked out, his hands clawing at Victor’s wrists. "We can... we can negotiate—"

"There is nothing to negotiate," Victor snarled. He shoved Moretti violently into the arms of Marcus and two arriving security guards. "Take him to the basement holding cell. Let the federal agents pick him up in the morning. I'm done playing games."

As the guards dragged Moretti kicking and screaming out of the study, the room fell into a heavy, trembling silence.

Victor dropped his pistol onto the desk, turned around, and saw Chloe standing by the desk, holding her bleeding cheek, her clothes rumpled, shaking from head to toe.

In a fraction of a second, all the terrifying mafia boss veneer dissolved. Victor was across the room in two strides, falling to his knees in front of her, gently taking her face in his hands.

"Chloe," he breathed, his voice breaking with raw, unfiltered terror. "Look at me. Did they hurt you?"

Chloe looked into his silver-gray eyes—eyes that had just faced down an entire syndicate syndicate without blinking, yet were currently swimming with fear for her safety.

She reached up, pressing her palm against his rough, smoke-stained cheek, offering a small, exhausted smile.

"I told you, Victor," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You're the safest place I know."
