Chapter 4 - The Unmasking of the AssistantBy 10:00 AM the following morning, the financial and social fallout from the lobby incident swept across Chicago's high-society journals like a tidal wave:

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: "Moretti Global CEO Suspended Following $15 Million Trust Misappropriation for Personal Assistant."

WALL STREET JOURNAL: "Moretti Global Board Appoints Claire Bennett-Moretti as Interim Managing Trustee."

Inside the thirty-first floor executive suite at Moretti Headquarters, private forensic auditors from Vance Security were pulling five years of digital server logs from Sophia Reynolds' private office.

I sat behind the wide mahogany desk wearing a breathtaking tailored cream silk pantsuit, holding one-month-old Leo in my arms, while senior corporate litigator Bridget Colton reviewed the digital files.

Vincent sat in the leather armchair across from me. He hadn't slept in twenty-four hours. His dark suit was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling as he drank black coffee.

Bridget Colton tapped her tablet screen, projecting high-definition email logs and offshore banking ledgers onto the room's wall displays:

THE SIX-YEAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Certified transaction records showing Sophia Reynolds using corporate expense accounts to siphon eight hundred thousand dollars over six years into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

THE LILY FALSEHOOD: Paternity and medical records revealing that Lily—Sophia’s six-year-old daughter—was not raised by a struggling single mother alone, but was co-parented by a wealthy real estate developer in Miami who had been sending Sophia twelve thousand dollars monthly in private support.

THE LEAK TO THE PRESS: Encrypted text messages showing Sophia personally leaking the mansion purchase deed to high-society reporters two hours before I received it, intending to force a public divorce so she could claim a permanent alimony settlement.

Vincent stared at the wall displays in utter, horrified silence.

His jaw sagged open. His coffee cup slipped from his fingers, crashing flat against the mahogany desk, hot black coffee splashing across his pristine leather blotter.

"She... she was siphoning funds for six years...?" Vincent choked out, his voice cracking into a pathetic, broken whisper. "She leaked the deed herself...?"

"She saw an arrogant CEO who thought he was untouchable, Vincent," I stated deadpan, handing Leo gently to his nurse before folding my hands flat against the desk. "She manipulated your ego, made you feel like a knight rescuing a maiden, and used my father's trust capital to fund her dream lifestyle."

Vincent buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, heartbroken sob that echoed through the quiet executive suite.
