Chapter 1 - The Gathering at Oakridge EstateThe heavy iron gates of the Moretti Estate in Lake Forest, Illinois, swung open with a quiet, pneumatic hiss. The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, casting long, crimson shadows across the manicured lawns and stone fountains of the ninety-room property.

Inside the rear seat of my sleek silver sedan, I sat in absolute silence, holding one-month-old Leo gently against my chest in a cashmere baby wrap. My dark hair fell in glossy, perfect waves over my shoulders, my hazel eyes calm, clear, and cold as glacier ice.
Behind us, a black Cadillac pulled into the gravel driveway.
Vincent Moretti stepped out of the vehicle wearing his dark bespoke suit. His broad, six-foot-two frame moved with a tense, rigid stride, his severe, carved-marble face pale beneath the driveway lanterns. Stepping out behind him, wearing a tight crimson designer dress and holding a micro-leather handbag, was Sophia Reynolds. Her hands were trembling, her polished, innocent facade rapidly dissolving into a sweating, terrified panic.
"Claire," Vincent spoke as he approached my door, his deep baritone tight with suppressed frustration. "We don't need to do this in front of my grandfather. I can transfer title shares into your name tonight. We can handle this privately!"
I didn't turn my head. I adjusted Leo's blanket with slow, unhurried grace.
"It was just a house, wasn't it, Vincent?" I replied, my clear, velvet voice cutting cleanly through the cool evening air. "Surely the patriarch of Moretti Global would love to hear how generous his grandson is with family trust capital."
Sophia stepped forward, her voice pitching upward in a desperate, groveling plea. "Mrs. Moretti! Please! Vincent was just helping me! Lily and I had nowhere else to go—"
"Save your tears for the drawing room, Miss Reynolds," I cut her off deadpan, looking straight into her eyes. "You wanted a mansion. Now you get to meet the men who paid for it."
The double oak doors of the grand manor were thrown wide open by the family butler.
Sitting inside the vaulted, wood-paneled drawing room near the grand marble fireplace were two men who commanded respect across the entire Midwest:
ANTHONY MORETTI (78): The formidable family patriarch and founder of Moretti Global Logistics, sitting in a wingback chair, his hands resting on his gold-headed cane, his dark storm-gray eyes burning with absolute, sovereign authority.
DOMINIC MORETTI (54): Vincent’s father and current Chairman of the Board, sitting across the low table, holding a thick leather folder bound by red seals.
Vincent stepped into the room, his broad shoulders squared, but the subtle twitch in his jaw betrayed his terror. Sophia hovered three steps behind him, shrinking into the shadows of the doorway.
I walked in calmly, holding one-month-old Leo, and took a seat on the silk sofa across from Anthony.
Old Anthony didn't look at Vincent. He looked at me, his severe face softening fractionally into a look of deep, ancient respect.
"Claire, my dear," Anthony spoke, his gravelly baritone echoing off the high ceilings. "How is my great-grandson?"
"He is fast asleep, Grandfather," I answered softly. "Thank you for calling us here."

Anthony slowly turned his head toward his grandson. The warmth vanished from his face instantly, replaced by a cold, apocalyptic fury that dropped the room's temperature to freezing.
"Vincent," Anthony commanded quietly. "Explain to me why my grandson’s wife had to order an enormous bouquet of roses to your downtown headquarters to learn about a fifteen-million-dollar real estate purchase."
