Chapter 6 - The New Dawn

Four weeks later, the crisp autumn wind swept through Central Park as I walked along the winding stone paths, pushing a sleek, midnight-blue stroller.
Inside the bassinet, little Leo Moretti-Vance slept peacefully, swaddled in soft cashmere, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect, effortless rhythm. His pediatric evaluations had confirmed that despite Dominic’s hidden medical reports, Leo was entirely healthy, possessing a strong heart and a fierce, unyielding spirit.
The legal battles were officially behind us. Moretti Holdings had been successfully reorganized under a new executive board, with a massive charitable trust established in Leo’s name using the recovered offshore assets Dominic had tried to steal. Charles Vane had been permanently disbarred and was currently cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for a plea deal that would still see him spend a decade behind bars. Vanessa Cole’s corporate career was finished, her reputation reduced to a cautionary tale taught in business ethics classes across the country.
As for me, I had stepped into my new life with a strength I never knew I possessed. I wasn't the naive girl who had walked into the Halston Grand Hotel ballroom beneath a thousand crystal lights. I was a survivor, a mother, and the architect of my own survival.
My phone buzzed in my coat pocket.
I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was a text message from Marcus:
Federal sentencing hearing just concluded. Judge threw the book at him. Twenty-five years, no parole eligibility for eighteen. The Moretti era is officially closed.
I locked the screen, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and looked down into the stroller. Leo stirred slightly, letting out a soft, contented sigh as his little fingers curled into tiny fists.
I bent down, kissed his warm forehead, and smiled as the morning sun broke through the golden leaves of the park, casting a brilliant, warm light across our path.

“Come on, sweet boy,” I whispered, turning toward the horizon where the Manhattan skyline stretched out endlessly beneath a clear, infinite blue sky.
“Let’s go home.”
