Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

By 9:00 a.m., Manhattan’s financial district was humming with its usual ruthless energy, but inside the soaring glass monolith of Moretti Holdings, an entirely different kind of storm was brewing.
According to Marcus’s real-time tracker, Dominic had discovered my disappearance shortly after 7:30 a.m. when his lead housekeeper knocked on our bedroom door with morning tea and found an empty bed. By 8:15 a.m., Charles Vane had rushed to the penthouse with emergency legal filings in hand, only to find the master safe empty of my passport, emergency cash reserves, and personal documents.
I watched the unfolding chaos from a secure, anonymous workspace Marcus had set up for me in a converted industrial loft in Long Island City—a place surrounded by towering server racks and humming cooling fans.
“He’s losing his mind,” Marcus said, spinning his desk chair around to face me while pointing at a multi-monitor display showing intercepted internal communications. “Dominic just initiated an emergency missing person report with the NYPD, but he’s spinning it as a mental health crisis. He’s telling detectives that I—excuse me, his unstable, paranoid wife—fled into the city during a psychotic break.”
I sipped my bottled water, feeling a strange, calm detachment settling over my chest. The fear that had paralyzed me in the hotel library was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, calculated focus.
“Let him call the police,” I said softly, watching a live feed of the front lobby of our Fifth Avenue building, where reporters were already beginning to gather after an anonymous tip conveniently leaked to the tabloids about Mrs. Moretti’s sudden, dramatic disappearance. “Every public statement he makes digging the hole deeper makes our eventual counter-strike that much more devastating.”
“Speaking of strikes,” Marcus said, typing a rapid sequence of commands into his primary terminal. “Take a look at this data stream. I breached the secondary partition of Dominic’s personal offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. You won't believe what your loving husband has been funding behind your back.”
I leaned over the back of Marcus’s chair, my eyes scanning the lines of cascading financial transactions scrolling down the black screen.
For the past fourteen months—spanning the entire duration of my high-risk pregnancy—Dominic had been systematically siphoning millions of dollars from Moretti Holdings corporate accounts into an unregistered, private Cayman shell company named Vanguard Health Partners.
“Vanguard Health Partners,” I murmured, reading the corporate registry details. “That’s not a medical trust. That’s a proprietary asset-stripping vehicle.”
“Bingo,” Marcus grinned grimly, adjusting his glasses. “Dominic isn't just planning to divorce you and take custody. He’s been quietly liquidating the company’s core commercial real estate assets to cheat his institutional investors and business partners out of a massive multi-billion-dollar buyout scheduled for next quarter. If the board finds out he’s moving corporate capital into private offshore accounts to fund personal acquisitions, he won't just lose custody—he’ll be facing federal securities fraud charges with a mandatory minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.”
A shiver of vindication ran down my spine. Dominic thought he was playing chess with a naive pregnant woman who didn't know the difference between a mutual fund and a mortgage note. He had no idea he was playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun, and his own greed had pulled the trigger.
“Can we tie the Cayman shell company directly to Charles Vane and Vanessa Cole?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
“Already done,” Marcus replied, hitting a key that generated a comprehensive visual network graph connecting Dominic, Vanessa, and Charles in a complex web of conspiracy, wire fraud, and falsified medical records. “Every single document, wire confirmation, and signed contract is backed up on decentralized servers across three continents. They can't delete it, they can't bribe their way out of it, and they certainly can't spin it as a wife’s paranoid hallucination.”
“Good,” I said, standing up and straightening my jacket. “Because it’s time to let Dominic know that his ghost hasn't vanished—she’s just repositioned herself behind enemy lines.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow. “What are you planning, Clara?”
“We’re going to give Dominic exactly what he wants,” I said with a thin, dangerous smile. “A high-level corporate board meeting.”
