Chapter 5 - The Downfall of a Empire

The federal indictments came down faster than a Manhattan summer thunderstorm.

Within seventy-two hours of the boardroom ambush, federal prosecutors formally charged Dominic Moretti and Charles Vane with multiple counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, conspiracy to commit extortion, and civil rights violations. The fabricated competency petition Dominic planned to file against me became Exhibit A in the federal prosecutor’s case file—a smoking gun proving premeditated malice and calculated deception.

Vanessa Cole resigned from Moretti Holdings by Monday morning, fleeing her Upper East Side apartment to avoid subpoenas, only to be intercepted by federal agents at JFK Airport attempting to board a one-way flight to Zurich.

The corporate board of Moretti Holdings moved swiftly to distance themselves from Dominic’s criminal enterprise. Under Arthur Sterling’s interim leadership, the board initiated a comprehensive internal audit, officially reinstating my position as a major equity stakeholder through pre-nuptial protections Dominic had foolishly signed years ago when he was still trying to impress my family’s legal legacy.

For the next month, I operated out of Marcus’s high-tech loft, far away from the paparazzi swarming our Fifth Avenue penthouse. I focused entirely on my health, my prenatal checkups, and building an unbreakable legal firewall around my son’s future.

Dominic was denied bail. The presiding federal judge deemed him a significant flight risk, pointing directly to his secret offshore shell companies and international medical contacts as clear evidence of his intent to flee jurisdiction.

On a crisp Tuesday afternoon in October, I sat in the glass-walled visitor room of the federal holding facility in lower Manhattan.

The door clicked open, and two guards led Dominic into the room.

He looked unrecognisable. Gone was the immaculate Brioni suit, the slicked-back dark hair, and the arrogant, untouchable smirk that had once defined his entire existence. He wore a standard orange jumpsuit that hung loosely over his frame, his shoulders slumped, his eyes hollow and defeated.

He sat down on the opposite side of the scratched metal table, staring at his cuffed hands for a long, agonizing moment before looking up at me.

“Clara,” he rasped, his voice cracked and broken. “Please. You have to talk to the U.S. Attorney. If you drop the civil charges, if you tell them it was all just a terrible misunderstanding... they might drop the federal fraud counts. I’m looking at twenty years, Clara. Twenty years.”

I looked at him across the table, feeling neither anger, nor hatred, nor sorrow. Just a profound, liberating emptiness where the pain used to live.

“You spent months plotting how to lock me away in a Swiss clinic, Dominic,” I said quietly, my voice steady and unyielding. “You looked me in the eyes while I was carrying your child and called me a toy you planned to throw away in the trash.”

“I was stressed! The corporate buyout was failing, the investors were breathing down my neck—”

“—and your first instinct was to destroy the person who loved you most,” I interrupted, standing up smoothly from my chair. I rested my hand gently over my belly, which now swelled proudly beneath my tunic. “You built an empire on lies, deception, and cruelty, Dominic. And now, you get to watch it burn right down to the foundation.”

“Clara, wait! Don't leave!” he cried out, panic flaring in his eyes as he stood up, the heavy metal chair scraping violently against the concrete floor. “What about our son? You can't keep him away from his father!”

I paused at the heavy steel door, turning back to look at him one last time.

“He doesn't have a father, Dominic,” I said softly. “He only has a mother who fought through hell to make sure he’ll never spend a single second under the shadow of a monster.”

The heavy steel door swung shut behind me with a loud, final click, locking him away in the exact kind of cage he had so carefully designed for me.
