Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Outside the bathroom door, the opulent hallway of Bellacourt Vineyard looked less like a wedding venue and more like a federal booking station.

Victoria Bellacourt was pushed against the floral wallpaper by two female federal agents, her designer suit wrinkled, her hair disheveled as the cold steel cuffs snapped onto her wrists.

"Do you know who I am?!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical rage as she glared at Mara Voss, who was walking out of the bathroom with a calm, deliberate stride. "I am a major donor to the state governor’s campaign! I will have your badge before the sun sets today, you pathetic little bureaucrat!"

"Your campaign donations stopped clearing when we seized your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands this morning, Mrs. Bellacourt," Mara replied smoothly, not breaking her stride.

Evan stood twenty feet away, flanked by two armed federal marshals. His face was entirely devoid of color, his hands trembling as he stared at the open, splintered door of the bathroom.

"Claire..." Evan choked out, taking a tentative step forward. "Is... is she okay? Is my baby okay?"

Mara stopped directly in front of him, her eyes narrowing with absolute contempt. She didn't answer with words. Instead, she reached into the tactical pocket of her vest, pulled out a thick, legal-sized manila folder stamped with federal grand jury seals, and slapped it hard against Evan’s chest.

Evan caught the folder automatically, his eyes scanning the bold text printed across the cover:

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT / DISTRICT OF NEW YORK

IN THE MATTER OF: BELLCOURT VINEYARDS CORP. ET AL.

CHARGES: WIRE FRAUD, TAX EVASION, MONEY LAUNDERING, CONSPIRACY.

CO-CONSPIRATOR SIGNATORY: EVAN BELLACOURT.

"You signed off on thirty-four fraudulent wire transfers between January and August, Mr. Bellacourt," Mara stated coldly. "You helped your mother embezzle pension funds from the vineyard workers to pay for your sister’s multi-million-dollar wedding—the very wedding you thought was more important than your wife’s medical emergency."

Evan dropped the folder as if it were burning his skin. His knees buckled slightly, and he leaned against the wall for support. "I... I had to. My mother said it was just temporary restructuring. I didn't know it was illegal..."

"Ignorance of federal racketeering laws doesn't hold up in front of a federal judge, Evan," Mara said, signaling the marshals. "Cuff him."

"No! Wait! Please!" Evan cried out as the cold metal bracelets snapped around his wrists, dragging him backward down the marble hallway. "Claire! Please let me explain! We can fix this!"

Celeste, still wearing her blood-stained designer wedding dress, stood frozen near the shattered champagne tower, weeping uncontrollably as she watched her mother and her brother hauled away in handcuffs by federal agents. The three hundred guests had long since fled, leaving behind an empty, silent vineyard echoing with the ghosts of a shattered empire.
