Chapter 1 - The Lockdown of Bellacourt Vineyard

The sterile white marble of the VIP restroom floor pressed coldly against Claire’s cheek as another violent, earth-shattering contraction ripped through her thirty-four-week pregnant body. Outside the heavy oak door, the muffled, thumping bass of a live string quartet and the polite applause of three hundred wealthy wedding guests sounded like a surreal soundtrack to a nightmare.
Just minutes earlier, under the glittering light of a multi-tiered crystal chandelier, Claire had stood beside her husband, Evan, watching his sister Celeste twirl in a couture gown worth more than a suburban home. She had felt a sudden, warm gush ruin her modest maternity dress—the unmistakable breaking of her amniotic sac. When she whispered her plea for help, Evan’s immediate reaction hadn't been panic, but a suffocating wave of social embarrassment. “Can you walk? The photographer is filming.”
And then Victoria Bellacourt, the iron-fisted matriarch of the family, had seized her arm like a prison guard, dragging her down the hallway with terrifying physical strength while Evan silently trailed behind like a whipped dog.
“This child has already stolen too much attention from Celeste,” Victoria had hissed, shoving Claire into the bathroom and slamming the door. “You’ll stay quiet until the cake is cut.”
The heavy mechanical click of the lock sealing from the outside had marked a permanent dividing line in Claire’s life. When she called out to her husband, Evan’s shadow had paused behind the wood panels, his voice dripping with callous indifference: “Just ten minutes, Claire. Don't make this worse.”
They had always underestimated her. Because she wore unbranded clothes, earned a modest government salary, and carried a locked metal briefcase everywhere she went, they dismissed her as “the little accountant.” Celeste frequently mocked her, and Evan laughed along to appease his mother, offering hollow apologies behind closed doors later.
What they never bothered to ask was what her department actually did.
Claire wasn't just a number-cruncher. She was a senior forensic auditor for the organized fraud and white-collar crime division of the State Attorney General’s Office. For nine months, while enduring the condescension of the Bellacourt family, she had quietly mapped their entire criminal enterprise—tracing millions of dollars funneling through fictitious vendors, doctored payrolls, and shell corporations registered to deceased residents. She had kept the evidence locked away, hoping against hope that Evan was clean, that he was merely a blind passenger to his family's corruption.
Two weeks ago, she found his signature on every single fraudulent wire transfer.
Gasping for air as a fresh wave of labor pains locked her muscles, Claire shoved her trembling hand into her leather purse, bypassing her personal iPhone to retrieve a heavy, matte-black encrypted satellite phone used exclusively during high-risk field operations.
She pressed speed-dial one.
Special Agent Mara Voss answered on the very first ring, her voice crisp and alert. "Claire?"
"I’m locked in the VIP bridal suite bathroom on the east side of Bellacourt Vineyard," Claire whispered into the receiver, her voice breaking as another contraction doubled her over. "My water broke prematurely. Send paramedics. Now."
On the other end of the line, Mara’s professional calm instantly vanished, replaced by lethal tactical urgency. "Who locked you in there?"
Claire stared up at the heavy brass lock on the door, feeling the last remnants of her familial warmth freeze into pure, unadulterated ice.

"The same people named in the sealed federal indictments," Claire breathed.
A heavy, pregnant pause hung over the encrypted line. Then, Mara’s voice cut through the static with absolute finality. "Stay conscious, Claire. Breathetake deep breaths. We’re coming to get you—and we’re bringing the entire federal task force."
