Chapter 2 - The Sins of the House of Bellacourt

Inside the sun-drenched grand courtyard of Bellacourt Vineyard, the champagne towers sparkled under the afternoon sun, completely oblivious to the ticking time bomb inside the east wing.

Evan Bellacourt forced a polite, charismatic smile as he clinked champagne flutes with a prominent local real estate developer. Yet, his eyes kept darting nervously toward the hallway leading to the bridal suites.

"Everything alright, Evan?" the developer asked, taking a sip of vintage rosé. "You look a bit rattled. Where’s your lovely wife? I thought she’d be front row for Celeste’s first dance."

"Oh, Claire isn't feeling well," Evan lied smoothly, adjusting his silk tie with a damp palm. "Just typical third-trimester exhaustion. She retired to a private room to rest. You know how unpredictable pregnancies can be."

"Understandable," the developer nodded, turning his attention back to the dance floor.

Evan exhaled a shaky breath, convincing himself that he had done the right thing. His mother was right—Claire always lacked the social grace required for high-society events. If she had caused a scene, crying about early labor during Celeste’s perfectly curated wedding video, the family’s brand reputation would have taken a hit. Bellacourt Vineyards was currently in the middle of securing a forty-million-dollar international distribution merger, and optics were everything.

As long as Claire stayed quiet in that room for another hour, the ceremony would finish, the reception would roll into dinner, and they could quietly ship her off to a private maternity clinic in the city without anyone noticing.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The sharp, synchronized sound of heavy combat boots suddenly echoed across the paved cobblestone courtyard, cutting straight through the string quartet’s performance.

Evan turned around, frowning.

Half a dozen black-and-white state police cruisers and two unmarked tactical vans had just smashed through the vineyard’s security gates, tires screeching as they formed a wide, unyielding perimeter around the main pavilion. Sirens wailed into the crisp air before cutting off abruptly, leaving an eerie, suffocating silence in their wake.

Before the wedding guests could even register the intrusion, heavily armed federal agents in ballistic vests and tactical helmets poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn and locked in low-ready positions.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Victoria Bellacourt shrieked, dropping her crystal champagne glass as it shattered into a thousand glittering pieces across the stone terrace. She swept forward, her designer ivory suit rustling with indignation as she confronted the lead agent marching toward the VIP pavilion. "This is a private wedding! How dare you bring guns onto my property? Do you know who my family is?!"

Special Agent Mara Voss slowed her pace, her piercing gaze sweeping over the terrified crowd of socialites and politicians before locking dead onto Victoria. Mara’s dark hair was tied back in a tactical braid, her badge gleaming sharply against her flak jacket.

"Victoria Bellacourt?" Mara asked, her voice carrying an authoritative chill that instantly silenced the surrounding guests.

"Yes, I am Victoria Bellacourt! I demand to speak to your superior—"

"Federal Special Agent Mara Voss, State Organized Crime and Fraud Division," Mara interrupted, flashing her shield with practiced precision. "You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, money laundering, racketeering, and unlawful confinement."

The courtyard erupted into absolute chaos. Gasps, screams, and shouts of outrage bounced off the vineyard walls. Celeste stopped dead in the middle of the dance floor, her white tulle dress catching on her heels as she stared in absolute horror.

Evan pushed his way through the panicked crowd, his face draining of all color as he confronted the federal agent. "Wait, there's been a mistake! My mother didn't do anything! Who authorized this?"

Mara turned her cold, analytical gaze onto Evan. She didn't blink.

"Your wife did, Mr. Bellacourt," Mara stated clearly, her voice cutting through the noise. "And right now, my tactical medics are breaking down the door to the VIP restroom because your family locked a woman in active labor inside a room while medical emergency protocols were ignored."

Evan stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck, the horrific realization crashing down upon him like a tidal wave.
