Chapter 3 - The Brother in the HallwayBefore my father could formulate another pathetic excuse, the door to my hospital room swung open once more.

Walking through the threshold, holding a sleek silver cane in his right hand, wearing a dark blue dress uniform adorned with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, was First Lieutenant Thomas Vance—my brother.

His left leg was braced from hip to ankle beneath his trousers, his jawline sharp, his gray eyes holding the exact same fierce, unyielding steel that ran through mine.

Richard turned his head slowly, staring at his son—the boy he hadn't spoken to since kicking him out of the house at eighteen for defending me against Linda.

"Tom...?" Richard choked out, tears streaming down his pale cheeks as he took a step toward him. "Tom... my son... look at you... you're a hero..."

Tom didn't offer a hug. He didn't offer a handshake.

He walked past our father as if Richard were nothing more than a ghost standing in the drafty corridor, stopping beside my bed, gently setting his broad hand over my fiberglass cast.

"How's the arm, little sister?" Tom asked softly, his voice rich with a deep, protective warmth.

"The orthopedic surgeon says I'll be back on the firing range in eight weeks," I smiled weakly, squeezing his hand with my fingers.

Tom turned his head slowly, looking at Richard with an icy, absolute distance that made our father cower against the wall.

"You called me your son," Tom spoke, his deep baritone carrying an absolute, freezing authority. "You lost the right to use that word fifteen years ago, Richard. When Maya and I were bleeding in the dirt after our convoy took three RPG hits in the valley, we didn't call for you. We called for each other."

"Tom... please," Richard wept, clutching his hands together in desperate, groveling surrender. "Linda manipulated me! She threatened to leave me! I was trying to keep our family together!"

"You sacrificed your own flesh and blood to keep a cruel, greedy woman happy," Tom replied flatly. "And now... you get to watch her burn."

Tom pulled an encrypted tablet from his jacket, tapping the glass screen, displaying a live video feed from the Cumberland County Detention Facility.

On the screen, Linda sat in an orange jumpsuit inside a cold holding cell, screaming hysterically at two public defenders while Cody sat outside the room in steel handcuffs, being interrogated by federal investigators regarding tax evasion linked to his boutique firm.

Richard collapsed onto his knees flat on the hospital floorboards, clutching his head in his hands, his loud, pathetic weeping echoing cleanly through the quiet room.

"Get up, Richard," General Hayes commanded flatly. "The MPs are taking you to the magistrate's office to sign over the real estate deeds before the asset forfeiture team arrives at your house at dawn."

Richard looked up into the eyes of the two children he had abandoned—seeing no longer the helpless, terrified orphans he had shoved into the basement, but two decorated sovereign officers who commanded the respect of the entire United States military.

He dragged his groveling frame off the floor, walking out through the doorway flanked by two armed MPs, his life, social standing, and wealth completely erased forever.
