Chapter 2 - The Audit of Eleven Years of LiesBefore the aircraft even touched down at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, I used the satellite transceiver on my private encrypted phone to issue a single, absolute command to my chief of security, Marcus Vance:

"SEIZE DOMINIC RUSSO’S PRIVATE ACCOUNTS. LOCK DOWN HIS ESTATES IN OAK BROOK AND RIVER NORTH. BRING BRIDGET COLTON TO THE AIRPORT HANGAR IMMEDIATELY."
The moment Flight 1184 came to a complete halt at the gate, three black armored Cadillac Escalades were already idling directly on the private tarmac.
Dominic Russo was escorted down the rear service stairs in heavy steel handcuffs by four armed Vance Security operatives, while Laura, Sophie, and I walked into the private VIP lounge overlooking the rainy runway.
Inside the glass-walled lounge sat Bridget Colton—senior litigator and forensic auditor for Moretti Global Capital—alongside a team of federal cyber-investigators.
Laura sat on a plush leather sofa, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, while six-year-old Sophie sat beside her, happily coloring in a drawing book provided by the lounge staff.
Bridget opened three thick leather binders bound by red seals, sliding a set of high-definition digital forensic ledgers across the glass coffee table toward me.
"Vincent, my dear," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "The photographs you received six years ago—the ones showing Laura kissing her college classmate in a hotel lobby in Dallas—were completely fabricated."
My jaw set into a line so rigid it felt like carved marble. "Fabricated...?"
"They were generated using an early deep-fake facial composite software developed by a defense contractor in Texas," Bridget revealed, tapping the second binder. "And the wire transfer that paid for that software—one hundred and fifty thousand dollars—came directly from a private off-ledger account owned by Dominic Russo."
I stared at the paper, my blood turning to liquid fire in my veins. "Why...? Why would Dominic do that?!"
"Because six years ago," Bridget explained, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register, "your late father’s estate charter stipulated that if you produced a legitimate heir with Laura, fifty-one percent of all voting stock in Moretti Global Logistics would be permanently locked inside an irrevocable family trust, preventing Dominic from executing his off-ledger smuggling operations through the Chicago ports."
Laura looked up from her tea, tears tracking silently down her pale cheeks.
"I tried to tell you, Vincent," Laura whispered, her voice cracking with six years of stored heartbreak. "The day you threw me out of the mansion, I stood in the rain for three hours begging you to check the security camera timestamps. I told you I was pregnant. But Dominic’s men escorted me to the gate and told me if I ever returned, they would make sure my baby never saw the light of day."
I fell flat onto my knees beside the sofa, reaching out my trembling hands, taking Laura’s hands into mine, burying my face in her lap.
"I’m sorry... I’m so sorry, Laura..." I wept, my baritone broken into shards. "I was a blind, arrogant fool... I let a serpent destroy our lives..."
May you like
Laura looked down at my wet face, her fingers slowly, hesitantly brushing through my dark hair, her hazel eyes filling with a soft, radiant, unbroken love that transcended six years of darkness.
"You're not a fool, Vincent," Laura whispered softly. "You were trapped in the dark. But now... our daughter has brought you back into the light."
