Chapter 7 - Unbroken and Forever HomeAt 8:30 PM, as the autumn sun dipped below the Chicago horizon, painting the sky in sweeping tapestries of indigo, gold, and deep sapphire, our living room was illuminated by soft, twinkling floor lamps.

Little Leo woke up from his nap, rubbing his eyes, letting out a sweet, soft coo.

I dropped onto my knees flat on the plush carpet, picking my six-month-old son up into my broad arms, kissing his soft forehead as he giggled happily, reaching his tiny hands out to pat my face.

Clara sat down on the rug beside us, resting her head comfortably against my shoulder, her broad arm wrapping around my waist, holding our son close between us.

Across the quiet streets of Lincoln Park, the distant rumble of the city sounded like a peaceful lullaby.

There were no cruel mothers feeding lies or forging adoption papers in dark hallways. There were no heavy restraints or needle marks causing terror in dark bedrooms. There were no secrets separating our hearts.

The foolish, blind husband was dead forever. The sovereign father had claimed his true home.

And standing under the warm, unbroken roof of our sunlit apartment, holding my wife and my son tight against my beating heart, listening to their sweet breathing under the stars, I knew that my life, my heart, and my family were finally, beautifully, and forever home.
